For the director of music. Of David. A psalm. My God, whom I praise, do not remain silent, | 1For the choir director. A Psalm of David. O God of my praise, Do not be silent! |
for people who are wicked and deceitful have opened their mouths against me; they have spoken against me with lying tongues. | 2For they have opened the wicked and deceitful mouth against me; They have spoken against me with a lying tongue. |
With words of hatred they surround me; they attack me without cause. | 3They have also surrounded me with words of hatred, And fought against me without cause. |
In return for my friendship they accuse me, but I am a man of prayer. | 4In return for my love they act as my accusers; But I am in prayer. |
They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my friendship. | 5Thus they have repaid me evil for good And hatred for my love. |
Appoint someone evil to oppose my enemy; let an accuser stand at his right hand. | 6Appoint a wicked man over him, And let an accuser stand at his right hand. |
When he is tried, let him be found guilty, and may his prayers condemn him. | 7When he is judged, let him come forth guilty, And let his prayer become sin. |
May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership. | 8Let his days be few; Let another take his office. |
May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow. | 9Let his children be fatherless And his wife a widow. |
May his children be wandering beggars; may they be driven from their ruined homes. | 10Let his children wander about and beg; And let them seek sustenance far from their ruined homes. |
May a creditor seize all he has; may strangers plunder the fruits of his labor. | 11Let the creditor seize all that he has, And let strangers plunder the product of his labor. |
May no one extend kindness to him or take pity on his fatherless children. | 12Let there be none to extend lovingkindness to him, Nor any to be gracious to his fatherless children. |
May his descendants be cut off, their names blotted out from the next generation. | 13Let his posterity be cut off; In a following generation let their name be blotted out. |
May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD; may the sin of his mother never be blotted out. | 14Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD, And do not let the sin of his mother be blotted out. |
May their sins always remain before the LORD, that he may blot out their name from the earth. | 15Let them be before the LORD continually, That He may cut off their memory from the earth; |
For he never thought of doing a kindness, but hounded to death the poor and the needy and the brokenhearted. | 16Because he did not remember to show lovingkindness, But persecuted the afflicted and needy man, And the despondent in heart, to put them to death. |
He loved to pronounce a curse-- may it come back on him. He found no pleasure in blessing-- may it be far from him. | 17He also loved cursing, so it came to him; And he did not delight in blessing, so it was far from him. |
He wore cursing as his garment; it entered into his body like water, into his bones like oil. | 18But he clothed himself with cursing as with his garment, And it entered into his body like water And like oil into his bones. |
May it be like a cloak wrapped about him, like a belt tied forever around him. | 19Let it be to him as a garment with which he covers himself, And for a belt with which he constantly girds himself. |
May this be the LORD's payment to my accusers, to those who speak evil of me. | 20Let this be the reward of my accusers from the LORD, And of those who speak evil against my soul. |
But you, Sovereign LORD, help me for your name's sake; out of the goodness of your love, deliver me. | 21But You, O GOD, the Lord, deal kindly with me for Your name's sake; Because Your lovingkindness is good, deliver me; |
For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me. | 22For I am afflicted and needy, And my heart is wounded within me. |
I fade away like an evening shadow; I am shaken off like a locust. | 23I am passing like a shadow when it lengthens; I am shaken off like the locust. |
My knees give way from fasting; my body is thin and gaunt. | 24My knees are weak from fasting, And my flesh has grown lean, without fatness. |
I am an object of scorn to my accusers; when they see me, they shake their heads. | 25I also have become a reproach to them; When they see me, they wag their head. |
Help me, LORD my God; save me according to your unfailing love. | 26Help me, O LORD my God; Save me according to Your lovingkindness. |
Let them know that it is your hand, that you, LORD, have done it. | 27And let them know that this is Your hand; You, LORD, have done it. |
While they curse, may you bless; may those who attack me be put to shame, but may your servant rejoice. | 28Let them curse, but You bless; When they arise, they shall be ashamed, But Your servant shall be glad. |
May my accusers be clothed with disgrace and wrapped in shame as in a cloak. | 29Let my accusers be clothed with dishonor, And let them cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe. |
With my mouth I will greatly extol the LORD; in the great throng of worshipers I will praise him. | 30With my mouth I will give thanks abundantly to the LORD; And in the midst of many I will praise Him. |
For he stands at the right hand of the needy, to save their lives from those who would condemn them. | 31For He stands at the right hand of the needy, To save him from those who judge his soul. |
