Now the LORD was gracious to Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what he had promised.1Then the LORD took note of Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah as He had promised.
Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the very time God had promised him.2So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the appointed time of which God had spoken to him.
Abraham gave the name Isaac to the son Sarah bore him.3Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac.
When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God commanded him.4Then Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.
Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.5Now Abraham was one hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.
Sarah said, "God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me."6Sarah said, "God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh with me."
And she added, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age."7And she said, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age."
The child grew and was weaned, and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast.8The child grew and was weaned, and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.
But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham was mocking,9Now Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, mocking.
and she said to Abraham, "Get rid of that slave woman and her son, for that woman's son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac."10Therefore she said to Abraham, "Drive out this maid and her son, for the son of this maid shall not be an heir with my son Isaac."
The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son.11The matter distressed Abraham greatly because of his son.
But God said to him, "Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.12But God said to Abraham, "Do not be distressed because of the lad and your maid; whatever Sarah tells you, listen to her, for through Isaac your descendants shall be named.
I will make the son of the slave into a nation also, because he is your offspring."13"And of the son of the maid I will make a nation also, because he is your descendant."
Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar. He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba.14So Abraham rose early in the morning and took bread and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar, putting them on her shoulder, and gave her the boy, and sent her away. And she departed and wandered about in the wilderness of Beersheba.
When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes.15When the water in the skin was used up, she left the boy under one of the bushes.
Then she went off and sat down about a bowshot away, for she thought, "I cannot watch the boy die." And as she sat there, she began to sob.16Then she went and sat down opposite him, about a bowshot away, for she said, "Do not let me see the boy die." And she sat opposite him, and lifted up her voice and wept.
God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, "What is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid; God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.17God heard the lad crying; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, "What is the matter with you, Hagar? Do not fear, for God has heard the voice of the lad where he is.
Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation."18"Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him by the hand, for I will make a great nation of him."
Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.19Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water; and she went and filled the skin with water and gave the lad a drink.
God was with the boy as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer.20God was with the lad, and he grew; and he lived in the wilderness and became an archer.
While he was living in the Desert of Paran, his mother got a wife for him from Egypt.21He lived in the wilderness of Paran, and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.
At that time Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces said to Abraham, "God is with you in everything you do.22Now it came about at that time that Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, spoke to Abraham, saying, "God is with you in all that you do;
Now swear to me here before God that you will not deal falsely with me or my children or my descendants. Show to me and the country where you now reside as a foreigner the same kindness I have shown to you."23now therefore, swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me or with my offspring or with my posterity, but according to the kindness that I have shown to you, you shall show to me and to the land in which you have sojourned."
Abraham said, "I swear it."24Abraham said, "I swear it."
Then Abraham complained to Abimelek about a well of water that Abimelek's servants had seized.25But Abraham complained to Abimelech because of the well of water which the servants of Abimelech had seized.
But Abimelek said, "I don't know who has done this. You did not tell me, and I heard about it only today."26And Abimelech said, "I do not know who has done this thing; you did not tell me, nor did I hear of it until today."
So Abraham brought sheep and cattle and gave them to Abimelek, and the two men made a treaty.27Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech, and the two of them made a covenant.
Abraham set apart seven ewe lambs from the flock,28Then Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock by themselves.
and Abimelek asked Abraham, "What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs you have set apart by themselves?"29Abimelech said to Abraham, "What do these seven ewe lambs mean, which you have set by themselves?"
He replied, "Accept these seven lambs from my hand as a witness that I dug this well."30He said, "You shall take these seven ewe lambs from my hand so that it may be a witness to me, that I dug this well."
So that place was called Beersheba, because the two men swore an oath there.31Therefore he called that place Beersheba, because there the two of them took an oath.
After the treaty had been made at Beersheba, Abimelek and Phicol the commander of his forces returned to the land of the Philistines.32So they made a covenant at Beersheba; and Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, arose and returned to the land of the Philistines.
Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the LORD, the Eternal God.33Abraham planted a tamarisk tree at Beersheba, and there he called on the name of the LORD, the Everlasting God.
And Abraham stayed in the land of the Philistines for a long time.34And Abraham sojourned in the land of the Philistines for many days.
