New International Version | New American Standard Bible 1995 |
To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ's sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: | 1Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, |
Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, watching over them--not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; | 2shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; |
not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. | 3nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock. |
And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away. | 4And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. |
In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, "God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble." | 5You younger men, likewise, be subject to your elders; and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE. |
Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. | 6Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, |
Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. | 7casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. |
Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. | 8Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. |
Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. | 9But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world. |
And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. | 10After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you. |
To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen. | 11To Him be dominion forever and ever. Amen. |
With the help of Silas, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it. | 12Through Silvanus, our faithful brother (for so I regard him), I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it! |
She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark. | 13She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you greetings, and so does my son, Mark. |
Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ. | 14Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace be to you all who are in Christ. |
