A psalm of Asaph. Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. | 1A psalm of Asaph. God is indeed good to Israel, to the pure in heart. |
But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold. | 2But as for me, my feet almost slipped; my steps nearly went astray. |
For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. | 3For I envied the arrogant; I saw the prosperity of the wicked. |
They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong. | 4They have an easy time until they die, and their bodies are well fed. |
They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills. | 5They are not in trouble like others; they are not afflicted like most people. |
Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence. | 6Therefore, pride is their necklace, and violence covers them like a garment. |
From their callous hearts comes iniquity; their evil imaginations have no limits. | 7Their eyes bulge out from fatness; the imaginations of their hearts run wild. |
They scoff, and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression. | 8They mock, and they speak maliciously; they arrogantly threaten oppression. |
Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth. | 9They set their mouths against heaven, and their tongues strut across the earth. |
Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance. | 10Therefore His people turn to them and drink in their overflowing words. |
They say, "How would God know? Does the Most High know anything?" | 11The wicked say, "How can God know? Does the Most High know everything?" |
This is what the wicked are like-- always free of care, they go on amassing wealth. | 12Look at them--the wicked! They are always at ease, and they increase their wealth. |
Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocence. | 13Did I purify my heart and wash my hands in innocence for nothing? |
All day long I have been afflicted, and every morning brings new punishments. | 14For I am afflicted all day long and punished every morning. |
If I had spoken out like that, I would have betrayed your children. | 15If I had decided to say these things aloud, I would have betrayed Your people. |
When I tried to understand all this, it troubled me deeply | 16When I tried to understand all this, it seemed hopeless |
till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny. | 17until I entered God's sanctuary. Then I understood their destiny. |
Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruin. | 18Indeed, You put them in slippery places; You make them fall into ruin. |
How suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors! | 19How suddenly they become a desolation! They come to an end, swept away by terrors. |
They are like a dream when one awakes; when you arise, Lord, you will despise them as fantasies. | 20Like one waking from a dream, Lord, when arising, You will despise their image. |
When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered, | 21When I became embittered and my innermost being was wounded, |
I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you. | 22I was stupid and didn't understand; I was an unthinking animal toward You. |
Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. | 23Yet I am always with You; You hold my right hand. |
You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory. | 24You guide me with Your counsel, and afterward You will take me up in glory. |
Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. | 25Who do I have in heaven but You? And I desire nothing on earth but You. |
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. | 26My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart, my portion forever. |
Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you. | 27Those far from You will certainly perish; You destroy all who are unfaithful to You. |
But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds. | 28But as for me, God's presence is my good. I have made the Lord GOD my refuge, so I can tell about all You do. |
