The LORD spoke to Moses:1The LORD said to Moses:
"Make two trumpets of silver; you are to make them from a single hammered piece. You will use them for assembling the community and for directing the traveling of the camps.2"Make two trumpets of hammered silver, and use them for calling the community together and for having the camps set out.
When they blow them both, all the community must come to you to the entrance of the tent of meeting. 3When both are sounded, the whole community is to assemble before you at the entrance to the tent of meeting.
"But if they blow with one trumpet, then the leaders, the heads of the thousands of Israel, must come to you.4If only one is sounded, the leaders--the heads of the clans of Israel--are to assemble before you.
When you blow an alarm, then the camps that are located on the east side must begin to travel.5When a trumpet blast is sounded, the tribes camping on the east are to set out.
And when you blow an alarm the second time, then the camps that are located on the south side must begin to travel. An alarm must be sounded for their journeys.6At the sounding of a second blast, the camps on the south are to set out. The blast will be the signal for setting out.
But when you assemble the community, you must blow, but you must not sound an alarm.7To gather the assembly, blow the trumpets, but not with the signal for setting out.
The sons of Aaron, the priests, must blow the trumpets; and they will be to you for an eternal ordinance throughout your generations.8"The sons of Aaron, the priests, are to blow the trumpets. This is to be a lasting ordinance for you and the generations to come.
If you go to war in your land against an adversary who opposes you, then you must sound an alarm with the trumpets, and you will be remembered before the LORD your God, and you will be saved from your enemies. 9When you go into battle in your own land against an enemy who is oppressing you, sound a blast on the trumpets. Then you will be remembered by the LORD your God and rescued from your enemies.
"Also in the time when you rejoice, such as on your appointed festivals or at the beginnings of your months, you must blow with your trumpets over your burnt offerings and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings, so that they may become a memorial for you before your God: I am the LORD your God." 10Also at your times of rejoicing--your appointed festivals and New Moon feasts--you are to sound the trumpets over your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, and they will be a memorial for you before your God. I am the LORD your God."
On the twentieth day of the second month, in the second year, the cloud was taken up from the tabernacle of the testimony.11On the twentieth day of the second month of the second year, the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle of the covenant law.
So the Israelites set out on their journeys from the wilderness of Sinai; and the cloud settled in the wilderness of Paran. 12Then the Israelites set out from the Desert of Sinai and traveled from place to place until the cloud came to rest in the Desert of Paran.
This was the first time they set out on their journey according to the commandment of the LORD, by the authority of Moses. 13They set out, this first time, at the LORD's command through Moses.

These were the traveling arrangements of the Israelites according to their companies when they traveled. 28This was the order of march for the Israelite divisions as they set out.
Moses said to Hobab son of Reuel, the Midianite, Moses' father-in-law, "We are journeying to the place about which the LORD said, 'I will give it to you.' Come with us and we will treat you well, for the LORD has promised good things for Israel."29Now Moses said to Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses' father-in-law, "We are setting out for the place about which the LORD said, 'I will give it to you.' Come with us and we will treat you well, for the LORD has promised good things to Israel."
But Hobab said to him, "I will not go, but I will go instead to my own land and to my kindred."30He answered, "No, I will not go; I am going back to my own land and my own people."
Moses said, "Do not leave us, because you know places for us to camp in the wilderness, and you could be our guide.31But Moses said, "Please do not leave us. You know where we should camp in the wilderness, and you can be our eyes.
And if you come with us, it is certain that whatever good things the LORD will favor us with, we will share with you as well." 32If you come with us, we will share with you whatever good things the LORD gives us."
So they traveled from the mountain of the LORD three days' journey; and the ark of the covenant of the LORD was traveling before them during the three days' journey, to find a resting place for them.33So they set out from the mountain of the LORD and traveled for three days. The ark of the covenant of the LORD went before them during those three days to find them a place to rest.
And the cloud of the LORD was over them by day, when they traveled from the camp.34The cloud of the LORD was over them by day when they set out from the camp.
And when the ark traveled, Moses would say, "Rise up, O LORD! May your enemies be scattered, and may those who hate you flee before you!"35Whenever the ark set out, Moses said, "Rise up, LORD! May your enemies be scattered; may your foes flee before you."
And when it came to rest he would say, "Return, O LORD, to the many thousands of Israel!" 36Whenever it came to rest, he said, "Return, LORD, to the countless thousands of Israel."
