Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the stomach of the fish | 1From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the LORD his God. |
and said, "I called out to the LORD from my distress, and he answered me; from the belly of Sheol I cried out for help, and you heard my prayer. | 2He said: "In my distress I called to the LORD, and he answered me. From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help, and you listened to my cry. |
You threw me into the deep waters, into the middle of the sea; the ocean current engulfed me; all the mighty waves you sent swept over me. | 3You hurled me into the depths, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all your waves and breakers swept over me. |
I thought I had been banished from your sight, that I would never again see your holy temple! | 4I said, 'I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.' |
Water engulfed me up to my neck; the deep ocean surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. | 5The engulfing waters threatened me, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. |
I went down to the very bottoms of the mountains; the gates of the netherworld barred me in forever; but you brought me up from the Pit, O LORD, my God. | 6To the roots of the mountains I sank down; the earth beneath barred me in forever. But you, LORD my God, brought my life up from the pit. |
When my life was ebbing away, I called out to the LORD, and my prayer came to your holy temple. | 7"When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, LORD, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple. |
Those who worship worthless idols forfeit the mercy that could be theirs. | 8"Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God's love for them. |
But as for me, I promise to offer a sacrifice to you with a public declaration of praise; I will surely do what I have promised. Salvation belongs to the LORD!" | 9But I, with shouts of grateful praise, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. I will say, 'Salvation comes from the LORD.'" |
Then the LORD commanded the fish and it disgorged Jonah on dry land. | 10And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. |
