Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the stomach of the fish | 1Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the stomach of the fish, |
and said, "I called out to the LORD from my distress, and he answered me; from the belly of Sheol I cried out for help, and you heard my prayer. | 2and he said, "I called out of my distress to the LORD, And He answered me. I cried for help from the depth of Sheol; You heard my voice. |
You threw me into the deep waters, into the middle of the sea; the ocean current engulfed me; all the mighty waves you sent swept over me. | 3"For You had cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the current engulfed me. All Your breakers and billows passed over me. |
I thought I had been banished from your sight, that I would never again see your holy temple! | 4"So I said, 'I have been expelled from Your sight. Nevertheless I will look again toward Your holy temple.' |
Water engulfed me up to my neck; the deep ocean surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. | 5"Water encompassed me to the point of death. The great deep engulfed me, Weeds were wrapped around my head. |
I went down to the very bottoms of the mountains; the gates of the netherworld barred me in forever; but you brought me up from the Pit, O LORD, my God. | 6"I descended to the roots of the mountains. The earth with its bars was around me forever, But You have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD my God. |
When my life was ebbing away, I called out to the LORD, and my prayer came to your holy temple. | 7"While I was fainting away, I remembered the LORD, And my prayer came to You, Into Your holy temple. |
Those who worship worthless idols forfeit the mercy that could be theirs. | 8"Those who regard vain idols Forsake their faithfulness, |
But as for me, I promise to offer a sacrifice to you with a public declaration of praise; I will surely do what I have promised. Salvation belongs to the LORD!" | 9But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving. That which I have vowed I will pay. Salvation is from the LORD." |
Then the LORD commanded the fish and it disgorged Jonah on dry land. | 10Then the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land. |
