Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the stomach of the fish1Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the stomach of the fish,
and said, "I called out to the LORD from my distress, and he answered me; from the belly of Sheol I cried out for help, and you heard my prayer. 2and he said, "I called out of my distress to the LORD, And He answered me. I cried for help from the depth of Sheol; You heard my voice.
You threw me into the deep waters, into the middle of the sea; the ocean current engulfed me; all the mighty waves you sent swept over me. 3"For You had cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the current engulfed me. All Your breakers and billows passed over me.
I thought I had been banished from your sight, that I would never again see your holy temple! 4"So I said, 'I have been expelled from Your sight. Nevertheless I will look again toward Your holy temple.'
Water engulfed me up to my neck; the deep ocean surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. 5"Water encompassed me to the point of death. The great deep engulfed me, Weeds were wrapped around my head.
I went down to the very bottoms of the mountains; the gates of the netherworld barred me in forever; but you brought me up from the Pit, O LORD, my God. 6"I descended to the roots of the mountains. The earth with its bars was around me forever, But You have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD my God.
When my life was ebbing away, I called out to the LORD, and my prayer came to your holy temple. 7"While I was fainting away, I remembered the LORD, And my prayer came to You, Into Your holy temple.
Those who worship worthless idols forfeit the mercy that could be theirs. 8"Those who regard vain idols Forsake their faithfulness,
But as for me, I promise to offer a sacrifice to you with a public declaration of praise; I will surely do what I have promised. Salvation belongs to the LORD!" 9But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving. That which I have vowed I will pay. Salvation is from the LORD."
Then the LORD commanded the fish and it disgorged Jonah on dry land. 10Then the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land.
