Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the stomach of the fish | 1 Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from inside the sea creature. |
and said, "I called out to the LORD from my distress, and he answered me; from the belly of Sheol I cried out for help, and you heard my prayer. | 2He said: "I called out to the LORD from the midst of affliction directed at me, and he answered me. From the depths of death I cried out for help; and you heard my cry. |
You threw me into the deep waters, into the middle of the sea; the ocean current engulfed me; all the mighty waves you sent swept over me. | 3You cast me into the deep— into the heart of the sea. Flood waters engulfed me. All your breakers and your waves swirled over me. |
I thought I had been banished from your sight, that I would never again see your holy temple! | 4So I told myself, 'I have been driven away from you. How will I again gaze on your holy Temple?' |
Water engulfed me up to my neck; the deep ocean surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. | 5Flood waters encompassed me, the deep surrounded me while seaweed wrapped around my head. |
I went down to the very bottoms of the mountains; the gates of the netherworld barred me in forever; but you brought me up from the Pit, O LORD, my God. | 6I sank to the roots of the mountains; the earth's prison bars closed around me forever. Yet you resurrect the dead from the Pit, LORD my God! |
When my life was ebbing away, I called out to the LORD, and my prayer came to your holy temple. | 7"As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD; and my prayer came to you in your holy Temple. |
Those who worship worthless idols forfeit the mercy that could be theirs. | 8Those who cling to vain idols leave behind the gracious love that could have been theirs. |
But as for me, I promise to offer a sacrifice to you with a public declaration of praise; I will surely do what I have promised. Salvation belongs to the LORD!" | 9But as for me, with a voice of thanksgiving I will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay. Deliverance is the LORD's!" |
Then the LORD commanded the fish and it disgorged Jonah on dry land. | 10Then the LORD spoke to the sea creature, and it spewed Jonah onto the dry land. |
