Corinthians 8

NET BibleNew International Version
With regard to food sacrificed to idols, we know that "we all have knowledge." Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.1Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that "We all possess knowledge." But knowledge puffs up while love builds up.
If someone thinks he knows something, he does not yet know to the degree that he needs to know.2Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know.
But if someone loves God, he is known by God. 3But whoever loves God is known by God.
With regard then to eating food sacrificed to idols, we know that "an idol in this world is nothing," and that "there is no God but one."4So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that "An idol is nothing at all in the world" and that "There is no God but one."
If after all there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many gods and many lords),5For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many "gods" and many "lords"),
yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we live, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we live. 6yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live.
But this knowledge is not shared by all. And some, by being accustomed to idols in former times, eat this food as an idol sacrifice, and their conscience, because it is weak, is defiled.7But not everyone possesses this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled.
Now food will not bring us close to God. We are no worse if we do not eat and no better if we do.8But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.
But be careful that this liberty of yours does not become a hindrance to the weak.9Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak.
For if someone weak sees you who possess knowledge dining in an idol's temple, will not his conscience be "strengthened" to eat food offered to idols?10For if someone with a weak conscience sees you, with all your knowledge, eating in an idol's temple, won't that person be emboldened to eat what is sacrificed to idols?
So by your knowledge the weak brother or sister, for whom Christ died, is destroyed.11So this weak brother or sister, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge.
If you sin against your brothers or sisters in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.12When you sin against them in this way and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.
For this reason, if food causes my brother or sister to sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I may not cause one of them to sin. 13Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother or sister to fall into sin, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause them to fall.
