A psalm of David, written when he was in the Judean wilderness. O God, you are my God! I long for you! My soul thirsts for you, my flesh yearns for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. | 1God, you are my God! I will fervently seek you. My soul thirsts for you; my flesh longs for you in a dry, weary, and parched land. |
Yes, in the sanctuary I have seen you, and witnessed your power and splendor. | 2So I have looked for you in the sanctuary, to behold your power and glory. |
Because experiencing your loyal love is better than life itself, my lips will praise you. | 3Because your gracious love is better than life itself, my lips will praise you. |
For this reason I will praise you while I live; in your name I will lift up my hands. | 4So I will bless you as long as I live; I will lift up my hands in your name. |
As if with choice meat you satisfy my soul. My mouth joyfully praises you, | 5Just as I am satisfied with the choicest of foods, so my lips will praise you joyfully. |
whenever I remember you on my bed, and think about you during the nighttime hours. | 6When I think of you in bed, I will meditate on you in the night watches. |
For you are my deliverer; under your wings I rejoice. | 7For you have been my strength, and in the shadow of your wings I will shout for joy. |
My soul pursues you; your right hand upholds me. | 8My soul clings to you, even as your right hand supports me. |
Enemies seek to destroy my life, but they will descend into the depths of the earth. | 9But as for those who seek to destroy me, they will go down to the depths of the earth; |
Each one will be handed over to the sword; their corpses will be eaten by jackals. | 10May they be given over to the power of the sword; may they become carrion for jackals. |
But the king will rejoice in God; everyone who takes oaths in his name will boast, for the mouths of those who speak lies will be shut up. | 11But as for the king, he will rejoice in God. Indeed, everyone who swears by God will exult, because the mouths of liars will be silenced. |
