A psalm of David, written when he was in the Judean wilderness. O God, you are my God! I long for you! My soul thirsts for you, my flesh yearns for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. | 1O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. |
Yes, in the sanctuary I have seen you, and witnessed your power and splendor. | 2So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. |
Because experiencing your loyal love is better than life itself, my lips will praise you. | 3Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. |
For this reason I will praise you while I live; in your name I will lift up my hands. | 4So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands. |
As if with choice meat you satisfy my soul. My mouth joyfully praises you, | 5My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips, |
whenever I remember you on my bed, and think about you during the nighttime hours. | 6when I remember you upon my bed, and meditate on you in the watches of the night; |
For you are my deliverer; under your wings I rejoice. | 7for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy. |
My soul pursues you; your right hand upholds me. | 8My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me. |
Enemies seek to destroy my life, but they will descend into the depths of the earth. | 9But those who seek to destroy my life shall go down into the depths of the earth; |
Each one will be handed over to the sword; their corpses will be eaten by jackals. | 10they shall be given over to the power of the sword; they shall be a portion for jackals. |
But the king will rejoice in God; everyone who takes oaths in his name will boast, for the mouths of those who speak lies will be shut up. | 11But the king shall rejoice in God; all who swear by him shall exult, for the mouths of liars will be stopped. |
