| 1Then Joseph hugged his father's face. He wept over him and kissed him. | 1Then Joseph embraced his father, cried over him, and kissed him. |
| 2Joseph instructed the physicians in his service to embalm his father, so the physicians embalmed Israel. | 2After this, he issued orders to his physician servants to embalm his father. So they embalmed Israel. |
| 3They took forty days, for that is the full time needed for embalming. The Egyptians mourned for him seventy days. | 3It took 40 days to complete the process, the normal period required for embalming. Meanwhile, the Egyptians mourned for him for 70 days. |
| 4When the days of mourning had passed, Joseph said to Pharaoh's royal court, "If I have found favor in your sight, please say to Pharaoh, | 4At the conclusion of the mourning period, Joseph addressed Pharaoh's household. "If you're satisfied with me, would you please take this message to Pharaoh for me? Tell him, |
| 5My father made me swear an oath. He said, "I am about to die. Bury me in my tomb that I dug for myself there in the land of Canaan." Now let me go and bury my father; then I will return.'" | 5My father told me, "Look! I'm about to die. Bury me in my grave that I dug for myself in the land of Canaan." So please let me travel to bury my father. I'll be right back.'" |
| 6So Pharaoh said, "Go and bury your father, just as he made you swear to do." | 6"Please go," Pharaoh replied. "Bury your father, as he asked you to do." |
| 7So Joseph went up to bury his father; all Pharaoh's officials went with him--the senior courtiers of his household, all the senior officials of the land of Egypt, | 7So Joseph got up and went to bury his father, accompanied by all of Pharaoh's servants, all of the elders of Egypt, |
| 8all Joseph's household, his brothers, and his father's household. | 10When they came to the threshing floor of Atad on the other side of the Jordan, they mourned there with very great and bitter sorrow. | 11When the Canaanites who lived in the land saw them mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, "This is a very sad occasion for the Egyptians." That is why its name was called Abel Mizraim, which is beyond the Jordan. | 11As soon as the Canaanites who lived in the land observed the mourning going on at Atad's threshing floor, they commented "This is a significant time of mourning for the Egyptians." That's why the place, which is located beyond the Jordan River, became known as Abel-mizraim. |
| 12So the sons of Jacob did for him just as he had instructed them. | 12And so Israel's sons did what he had instructed them to do: |
| 13His sons carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave of the field of Machpelah, near Mamre. This is the field Abraham purchased as a burial plot from Ephron the Hittite. | 13they carried him to the territory of Canaan and buried him in the cave in Machpelah field near Mamre that Abraham had purchased as a cemetery from Ephron the Hittite. |
| 14After he buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, along with his brothers and all who had accompanied him to bury his father. | 14After he had buried his father, Joseph and his brothers returned to Egypt, along with everyone who had gone with him to attend the burial. |
| 15When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "What if Joseph bears a grudge and wants to repay us in full for all the harm we did to him?" | 15Later, after Joseph's brothers faced the reality of their father's death, they asked themselves, "What happens if Joseph decides to hold a grudge against us? What if he pays us back in full for all the wrong things we did to him?" |
| 16So they sent word to Joseph, saying, "Your father gave these instructions before he died: | 16So they sent this message to Joseph: |
| 17Tell Joseph this: Please forgive the sin of your brothers and the wrong they did when they treated you so badly.' Now please forgive the sin of the servants of the God of your father." When this message was reported to him, Joseph wept. | 17"Before he died, your father left some instructions. He told us, 'Tell Joseph, "Please forgive your brothers' offenses. I beg you, forgive their sins, because they wronged you."' So please forgive the transgression of the servants of your father's God." Joseph wept when they talked to him. |
| 18Then his brothers also came and threw themselves down before him; they said, "Here we are; we are your slaves." | 18So Joseph's brothers went to visit him, fell prostrate in front of him, and declared, "Look! We're your servants." |
| 19But Joseph answered them, "Don't be afraid. Am I in the place of God? | 19"Don't be afraid," Joseph responded. "Am I sitting in God's place? |
| 20As for you, you meant to harm me, but God intended it for a good purpose, so he could preserve the lives of many people, as you can see this day. | 20As far as you're concerned, you were planning evil against me, but God intended it for good, planning to bring about the present result so that many people would be preserved alive. |
| 21So now, don't be afraid. I will provide for you and your little children." Then he consoled them and spoke kindly to them. | 21So don't be afraid! I'll take care of you and your little ones." So Joseph kept on comforting them, speaking to the needs of their hearts. |
| 22Joseph lived in Egypt, along with his father's family. Joseph lived 110 years. | 22Joseph continued to live in Egypt, along with his father's household, until he was 110 years old. |
| 23Joseph saw the descendants of Ephraim to the third generation. He also saw the children of Makir the son of Manasseh; they were given special inheritance rights by Joseph. | 23Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim's children, as well as the children who had been born to Manasseh's son Machir, whom he adopted as his own. |
| 24Then Joseph said to his brothers, "I am about to die. But God will surely come to you and lead you up from this land to the land he swore on oath to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob." | 24Later, Joseph told his brothers, "I'm going to die soon, but God will certainly provide for you and bring you up from this land to the land that he promised with an oath to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob." |
| 25Joseph made the sons of Israel swear an oath. He said, "God will surely come to you. Then you must carry my bones up from this place." | 25So Joseph made all of Israel's other children make this promise: "Because God is certainly going to take care of you, you are to carry my bones up from here." |
| 26So Joseph died at the age of 110. After they embalmed him, his body was placed in a coffin in Egypt. | 26Some time later, Joseph died at the age of 110 years, and he was embalmed and placed in a coffin in Egypt. |
