For the music director; according to the shushan-eduth style; a prayer of David written to instruct others. It was written when he fought against Aram Naharaim and Aram-Zobah. That was when Joab turned back and struck down 12,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt. O God, you have rejected us. You suddenly turned on us in your anger. Please restore us! | 1God, you have rejected us; you have broken us down; you have been angry. Restore us! |
You made the earth quake; you split it open. Repair its breaches, for it is ready to fall. | 2You have shaken the land and split it open. Heal its fissures, for it shudders. |
You have made your people experience hard times; you have made us drink intoxicating wine. | 3You have made your people suffer hardship; you have given us wine to drink that made us stagger. |
You have given your loyal followers a rallying flag, so that they might seek safety from the bow. (Selah) | 4You have given a signal flag to those who fear you, so that they can flee before the archers. Selah |
Deliver by your power and answer me, so that the ones you love may be safe. | 5Save with your right hand, and answer me, so that those you love may be rescued. |
God has spoken in his sanctuary: "I will triumph! I will parcel out Shechem; the Valley of Succoth I will measure off. | 6God has spoken in his sanctuary: "I will celebrate! I will divide up Shechem. I will apportion the Valley of Succoth. |
Gilead belongs to me, as does Manasseh! Ephraim is my helmet, Judah my royal scepter. | 7Gilead is mine, Manasseh is mine, and Ephraim is my helmet; Judah is my scepter. |
Moab is my washbasin. I will make Edom serve me. I will shout in triumph over Philistia." | 8Moab is my washbasin. I throw my sandal on Edom; I shout in triumph over Philistia." |
Who will lead me into the fortified city? Who will bring me to Edom? | 9Who will bring me to the fortified city? Who will lead me to Edom? |
Have you not rejected us, O God? O God, you do not go into battle with our armies. | 10God, haven't you rejected us? God, you do not march out with our armies. |
Give us help against the enemy, for any help men might offer is futile. | 11Give us aid against the foe, for human help is worthless. |
By God's power we will conquer; he will trample down our enemies. | 12With God we will perform valiantly; he will trample our foes. |
