1Now these are the records of the generations of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah; and sons were born to them after the flood. | 1This is the account of the families of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the three sons of Noah. 2The sons of Japheth were Gomer and Magog and Madai and Javan and Tubal and Meshech and Tiras. | 2The descendants of Japheth were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. |
3The sons of Gomer were Ashkenaz and Riphath and Togarmah. | 3The descendants of Gomer were Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. |
4The sons of Javan were Elishah and Tarshish, Kittim and Dodanim. | 4The descendants of Javan were Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Rodanim. |
5From these the coastlands of the nations were separated into their lands, every one according to his language, according to their families, into their nations. | 5Their descendants became the seafaring peoples that spread out to various lands, each identified by its own language, clan, and national identity. 6The sons of Ham were Cush and Mizraim and Put and Canaan. | 6The descendants of Ham were Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan. |
7The sons of Cush were Seba and Havilah and Sabtah and Raamah and Sabteca; and the sons of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan. | 7The descendants of Cush were Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The descendants of Raamah were Sheba and Dedan. |
8Now Cush became the father of Nimrod; he became a mighty one on the earth. | 8Cush was also the ancestor of Nimrod, who was the first heroic warrior on earth. |
9He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; therefore it is said, "Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the LORD." | 9Since he was the greatest hunter in the world, his name became proverbial. People would say, “This man is like Nimrod, the greatest hunter in the world.” |
10The beginning of his kingdom was Babel and Erech and Accad and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. | 10He built his kingdom in the land of Babylonia, with the cities of Babylon, Erech, Akkad, and Calneh. |
11From that land he went forth into Assyria, and built Nineveh and Rehoboth-Ir and Calah, | 11From there he expanded his territory to Assyria, building the cities of Nineveh, Rehoboth-ir, Calah, |
12and Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city. | 12and Resen (the great city located between Nineveh and Calah). |
13Mizraim became the father of Ludim and Anamim and Lehabim and Naphtuhim | 13Mizraim was the ancestor of the Ludites, Anamites, Lehabites, Naphtuhites, |
14and Pathrusim and Casluhim (from which came the Philistines) and Caphtorim. | 14Pathrusites, Casluhites, and the Caphtorites, from whom the Philistines came. |
15Canaan became the father of Sidon, his firstborn, and Heth | 15Canaan’s oldest son was Sidon, the ancestor of the Sidonians. Canaan was also the ancestor of the Hittites, |
16and the Jebusite and the Amorite and the Girgashite | 16Jebusites, Amorites, Girgashites, |
17and the Hivite and the Arkite and the Sinite | 17Hivites, Arkites, Sinites, |
18and the Arvadite and the Zemarite and the Hamathite; and afterward the families of the Canaanite were spread abroad. | 18Arvadites, Zemarites, and Hamathites. The Canaanite clans eventually spread out, |
19The territory of the Canaanite extended from Sidon as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; as you go toward Sodom and Gomorrah and Admah and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha. | 19and the territory of Canaan extended from Sidon in the north to Gerar and Gaza in the south, and east as far as Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, near Lasha. |
20These are the sons of Ham, according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, by their nations. | 20These were the descendants of Ham, identified by clan, language, territory, and national identity. Descendants of Shem |
21Also to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, and the older brother of Japheth, children were born. | 21Sons were also born to Shem, the older brother of Japheth. Shem was the ancestor of all the descendants of Eber. |
22The sons of Shem were Elam and Asshur and Arpachshad and Lud and Aram. | 22The descendants of Shem were Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram. |
23The sons of Aram were Uz and Hul and Gether and Mash. | 23The descendants of Aram were Uz, Hul, Gether, and Mash. |
24Arpachshad became the father of Shelah; and Shelah became the father of Eber. | 24Arphaxad was the father of Shelah, and Shelah was the father of Eber. |
25Two sons were born to Eber; the name of the one was Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother's name was Joktan. | 25Eber had two sons. The first was named Peleg (which means “division”), for during his lifetime the people of the world were divided into different language groups. His brother’s name was Joktan. |
26Joktan became the father of Almodad and Sheleph and Hazarmaveth and Jerah | 26Joktan was the ancestor of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, Jerah, |
27and Hadoram and Uzal and Diklah | 27Hadoram, Uzal, Diklah, |
28and Obal and Abimael and Sheba | 28Obal, Abimael, Sheba, |
29and Ophir and Havilah and Jobab; all these were the sons of Joktan. | 29Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were descendants of Joktan. |
30Now their settlement extended from Mesha as you go toward Sephar, the hill country of the east. | 30The territory they occupied extended from Mesha all the way to Sephar in the eastern mountains. |
31These are the sons of Shem, according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, according to their nations. | 31These were the descendants of Shem, identified by clan, language, territory, and national identity. Conclusion |
32These are the families of the sons of Noah, according to their genealogies, by their nations; and out of these the nations were separated on the earth after the flood. | 32These are the clans that descended from Noah’s sons, arranged by nation according to their lines of descent. All the nations of the earth descended from these clans after the great flood. |
