New American Standard Bible 1995 | New Living Translation |
But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, | 1Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons. |
by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron, | 2These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead. |
men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth. | 3They will say it is wrong to be married and wrong to eat certain foods. But God created those foods to be eaten with thanks by faithful people who know the truth. |
For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude; | 4Since everything God created is good, we should not reject any of it but receive it with thanks. |
for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer. | 5For we know it is made acceptable by the word of God and prayer. A Good Servant of Christ Jesus |
In pointing out these things to the brethren, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound doctrine which you have been following. | 6If you explain these things to the brothers and sisters, Timothy, you will be a worthy servant of Christ Jesus, one who is nourished by the message of faith and the good teaching you have followed. |
But have nothing to do with worldly fables fit only for old women. On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; | 7Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly. |
for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. | 8“Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.” |
It is a trustworthy statement deserving full acceptance. | 9This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it. |
For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers. | 10This is why we work hard and continue to struggle, for our hope is in the living God, who is the Savior of all people and particularly of all believers. |
Prescribe and teach these things. | 11Teach these things and insist that everyone learn them. |
Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe. | 12Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity. |
Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching. | 13Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the believers, and teaching them. |
Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbytery. | 14Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received through the prophecy spoken over you when the elders of the church laid their hands on you. |
Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all. | 15Give your complete attention to these matters. Throw yourself into your tasks so that everyone will see your progress. |
Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you. | 16Keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching. Stay true to what is right for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you. |
