New American Standard Bible 1995 | New International Version |
But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, | 1The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. |
by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron, | 2Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. |
men who forbid marriage and advocate abstaining from foods which God has created to be gratefully shared in by those who believe and know the truth. | 3They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. |
For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with gratitude; | 4For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, |
for it is sanctified by means of the word of God and prayer. | 5because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer. |
In pointing out these things to the brethren, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound doctrine which you have been following. | 6If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed. |
But have nothing to do with worldly fables fit only for old women. On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; | 7Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. |
for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. | 8For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. |
It is a trustworthy statement deserving full acceptance. | 9This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance. |
For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers. | 10That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe. |
Prescribe and teach these things. | 11Command and teach these things. |
Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe. | 12Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. |
Until I come, give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching. | 13Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. |
Do not neglect the spiritual gift within you, which was bestowed on you through prophetic utterance with the laying on of hands by the presbytery. | 14Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you. |
Take pains with these things; be absorbed in them, so that your progress will be evident to all. | 15Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. |
Pay close attention to yourself and to your teaching; persevere in these things, for as you do this you will ensure salvation both for yourself and for those who hear you. | 16Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. |
