King James Bible | New Living Translation |
To the chief Musician, Altaschith, Michtam of David; when Saul sent, and they watched the house to kill him. Deliver me from mine enemies, O my God: defend me from them that rise up against me. | 1Rescue me from my enemies, O God. Protect me from those who have come to destroy me. |
Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloody men. | 2Rescue me from these criminals; save me from these murderers. |
For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul: the mighty are gathered against me; not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O LORD. | 3They have set an ambush for me. Fierce enemies are out there waiting, LORD, though I have not sinned or offended them. |
They run and prepare themselves without my fault: awake to help me, and behold. | 4I have done nothing wrong, yet they prepare to attack me. Wake up! See what is happening and help me! |
Thou therefore, O LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel, awake to visit all the heathen: be not merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah. | 5O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, wake up and punish those hostile nations. Show no mercy to wicked traitors. Interlude |
They return at evening: they make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city. | 6They come out at night, snarling like vicious dogs as they prowl the streets. |
Behold, they belch out with their mouth: swords are in their lips: for who, say they, doth hear? | 7Listen to the filth that comes from their mouths; their words cut like swords. “After all, who can hear us?” they sneer. |
But thou, O LORD, shalt laugh at them; thou shalt have all the heathen in derision. | 8But LORD, you laugh at them. You scoff at all the hostile nations. |
Because of his strength will I wait upon thee: for God is my defence. | 9You are my strength; I wait for you to rescue me, for you, O God, are my fortress. |
The God of my mercy shall prevent me: God shall let me see my desire upon mine enemies. | 10In his unfailing love, my God will stand with me. He will let me look down in triumph on all my enemies. |
Slay them not, lest my people forget: scatter them by thy power; and bring them down, O Lord our shield. | 11Don’t kill them, for my people soon forget such lessons; stagger them with your power, and bring them to their knees, O Lord our shield. |
For the sin of their mouth and the words of their lips let them even be taken in their pride: and for cursing and lying which they speak. | 12Because of the sinful things they say, because of the evil that is on their lips, let them be captured by their pride, their curses, and their lies. |
Consume them in wrath, consume them, that they may not be: and let them know that God ruleth in Jacob unto the ends of the earth. Selah. | 13Destroy them in your anger! Wipe them out completely! Then the whole world will know that God reigns in Israel. Interlude |
And at evening let them return; and let them make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city. | 14My enemies come out at night, snarling like vicious dogs as they prowl the streets. |
Let them wander up and down for meat, and grudge if they be not satisfied. | 15They scavenge for food but go to sleep unsatisfied. |
But I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble. | 16But as for me, I will sing about your power. Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love. For you have been my refuge, a place of safety when I am in distress. |
Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defence, and the God of my mercy. | 17O my Strength, to you I sing praises, for you, O God, are my refuge, the God who shows me unfailing love. |
