And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. | 3During that time the devil came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become loaves of bread.” |
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. | 4But Jesus told him, “No! The Scriptures say, ‘People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” |
Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, | 5Then the devil took him to the holy city, Jerusalem, to the highest point of the Temple, |
And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. | 6and said, “If you are the Son of God, jump off! For the Scriptures say, ‘He will order his angels to protect you. And they will hold you up with their hands so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.’ ” |
Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. | 7Jesus responded, “The Scriptures also say, ‘You must not test the LORD your God.’ ” |
Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; | 8Next the devil took him to the peak of a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. |
And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. | 9“I will give it all to you,” he said, “if you will kneel down and worship me.” |
Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. | 10 “Get out of here, Satan,” Jesus told him. “For the Scriptures say, ‘You must worship the LORD your God and serve only him.’ ” |
Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him. | 11Then the devil went away, and angels came and took care of Jesus. The Ministry of Jesus Begins |

The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up. | 16the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light. And for those who lived in the land where death casts its shadow, a light has shined.” |

And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men. | 19Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!” |
And they straightway left their nets, and followed him. | 20And they left their nets at once and followed him. |
And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. | 21A little farther up the shore he saw two other brothers, James and John, sitting in a boat with their father, Zebedee, repairing their nets.
