And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. | 1Saturday evening, when the Sabbath ended, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome went out and purchased burial spices so they could anoint Jesus’ body. |
And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun. | 2Very early on Sunday morning, just at sunrise, they went to the tomb. |
And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre? | 3On the way they were asking each other, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” |
And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great. | 4But as they arrived, they looked up and saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled aside. |
And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. | 5When they entered the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a white robe sitting on the right side. The women were shocked, |
And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him. | 6but the angel said, “Don’t be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Look, this is where they laid his body. |
But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you. | 7Now go and tell his disciples, including Peter, that Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you before he died.” |
And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid. | 8The women fled from the tomb, trembling and bewildered, and they said nothing to anyone because they were too frightened. ---------- [ The most ancient manuscripts of Mark conclude with verse 16:8. Later manuscripts add one or both of the following endings. ] [ Shorter Ending of Mark ] Then they briefly reported all this to Peter and his companions. Afterward Jesus himself sent them out from east to west with the sacred and unfailing message of salvation that gives eternal life. Amen. [ Longer Ending of Mark ] |
Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils. | 9After Jesus rose from the dead early on Sunday morning, the first person who saw him was Mary Magdalene, the woman from whom he had cast out seven demons. |
And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept. | 10She went to the disciples, who were grieving and weeping, and told them what had happened. |
And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not. | 11But when she told them that Jesus was alive and she had seen him, they didn’t believe her. |
After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country. | 12Afterward he appeared in a different form to two of his followers who were walking from Jerusalem into the country. |
And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them. | 13They rushed back to tell the others, but no one believed them. |
Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen. | 14Still later he appeared to the eleven disciples as they were eating together. He rebuked them for their stubborn unbelief because they refused to believe those who had seen him after he had been raised from the dead. |
And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. | 15And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. |
He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. | 16 Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned. |
And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; | 17 These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name, and they will speak in new languages. |
They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. | 18 They will be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything poisonous, it won’t hurt them. They will be able to place their hands on the sick, and they will be healed.” |
So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. | 19When the Lord Jesus had finished talking with them, he was taken up into heaven and sat down in the place of honor at God’s right hand. |
And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen. | 20And the disciples went everywhere and preached, and the Lord worked through them, confirming what they said by many miraculous signs. |
