But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: | 1But as for you, speak the things which are fitting for sound doctrine. |
That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. | 2Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance. |
The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; | 3Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, |
That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, | 4so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, |
To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. | 5to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored. |
Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. | 6Likewise urge the young men to be sensible; |
In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, | 7in all things show yourself to be an example of good deeds, with purity in doctrine, dignified, |
Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. | 8sound in speech which is beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be put to shame, having nothing bad to say about us. |
Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; | 9Urge bondslaves to be subject to their own masters in everything, to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, |
Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. | 10not pilfering, but showing all good faith so that they will adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in every respect. |
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, | 11For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, |
Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; | 12instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, |
Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; | 13looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, |
Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. | 14who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. |
These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee. | 15These things speak and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you. |
