But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: | 1But as for you, speak the things that are consistent with sound doctrine. |
That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. | 2Older men are to be temperate, dignified, self-controlled, and sound in faith, love, and perseverance. |
The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; | 3Older women, likewise, are to be reverent in their behavior, not slanderers or addicted to much wine, but teachers of good. |
That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, | 4In this way they can train the young women to love their husbands and children, |
To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. | 5to be self-controlled, pure, managers of their households, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be discredited. |
Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. | 6In the same way, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. |
In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, | 7In everything, show yourself to be an example by doing good works. In your teaching show integrity, dignity, |
Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. | 8and wholesome speech that is above reproach, so that anyone who opposes us will be ashamed to have nothing bad to say about us. |
Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; | 9Slaves are to submit to their own masters in everything, to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, |
Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. | 10not stealing from them, but showing all good faith, so that in every respect they will adorn the teaching about God our Savior. |
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, | 11For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to everyone. |
Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; | 12It instructs us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live sensible, upright, and godly lives in the present age, |
Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; | 13as we await the blessed hope and glorious appearance of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ. |
Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. | 14He gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds. |
These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee. | 15Speak these things as you encourage and rebuke with all authority. Let no one despise you. |
