King James Bible | International Standard Version |
The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: | 1Therefore, as a fellow elder, a witness of the Messiah's sufferings, and one who shares in the glory to be revealed, I appeal to the elders among you: |
Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; | 2Be shepherds of God's flock that is among you, watching over it, not because you must but because you want to, and not greedily but eagerly, as God desires. |
Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. | 3Do not lord it over the people entrusted to you, but be examples to the flock. |
And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away. | 4Then, when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the victor's crown of glory that will never fade away. |
Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. | 5In a similar way, you young people must submit to the elders. All of you must clothe yourselves with humility for the sake of each other, because: "God opposes the arrogant, but gives grace to the humble." |
Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: | 6Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, so that at the proper time he may exalt you. |
Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. | 7Throw all your worry on him, because he cares for you. |
Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: | 8Be clear-minded and alert. Your opponent, the devil, is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. |
Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. | 9Resist him and be firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of suffering. |
But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. | 10After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you by the Messiah Jesus to his eternal glory, will restore you, establish you, strengthen you, and support you. |
To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. | 11Power belongs to him forever and ever! Amen. |
By Silvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I suppose, I have written briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand. | 12Through Silvanus, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written this short letter to encourage you and to testify that this is to be the true grace of God in which you are to stand firm! |
The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son. | 13Your sister church in Babylon, chosen along with you, sends you greetings, as does Mark, whom I regard as a son. |
Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity. Peace be with you all that are in Christ Jesus. Amen. | 14Greet one another with a loving kiss. Peace be to all of you who are in the Messiah! |
