The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre.1On the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark. She saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb.
Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.2So she ran to Simon Peter and to the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put Him!"
Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.3At that, Peter and the other disciple went out, heading for the tomb.
So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.4The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and got to the tomb first.
And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in.5Stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying there, yet he did not go in.
Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie,6Then, following him, Simon Peter came also. He entered the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there.
And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself.7The wrapping that had been on His head was not lying with the linen cloths but was folded up in a separate place by itself.
Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed.8The other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, then entered the tomb, saw, and believed.
For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.9For they still did not understand the Scripture that He must rise from the dead.
Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.10Then the disciples went home again.
But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping: and as she wept, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,11But Mary stood outside facing the tomb, crying. As she was crying, she stooped to look into the tomb.
And seeth two angels in white sitting, the one at the head, and the other at the feet, where the body of Jesus had lain.12She saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet, where Jesus' body had been lying.
And they say unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.13They said to her, "Woman, why are you crying?"" Because they've taken away my Lord," she told them, "and I don't know where they've put Him."
And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus.14Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, though she did not know it was Jesus.
Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.15"Woman," Jesus said to her, "why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?" Supposing He was the gardener, she replied, "Sir, if you've removed Him, tell me where you've put Him, and I will take Him away."
Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master.16Jesus said, "Mary." Turning around, she said to Him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni!"--which means "Teacher."
Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.17"Don't cling to Me," Jesus told her, "for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to My brothers and tell them that I am ascending to My Father and your Father--to My God and your God."
Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken these things unto her.18Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them what He had said to her.
Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.19In the evening of that first day of the week, the disciples were gathered together with the doors locked because of their fear of the Jews. Then Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, "Peace to you!"
And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.20Having said this, He showed them His hands and His side. So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.
Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.21Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you."
And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:22After saying this, He breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.23If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."
But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came.24But one of the Twelve, Thomas (called "Twin"), was not with them when Jesus came.
The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe.25So the other disciples kept telling him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "If I don't see the mark of the nails in His hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe!"
And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you.26After eight days His disciples were indoors again, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them. He said, "Peace to you!"
Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.27Then He said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and observe My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Don't be an unbeliever, but a believer."
And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God.28Thomas responded to Him, "My Lord and my God!"
Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.29Jesus said, "Because you have seen Me, you have believed. Those who believe without seeing are blessed."
And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:30Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples that are not written in this book.
But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.31But these are written so that you may believe Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and by believing you may have life in His name.
