A Psalm of Asaph. The mighty God, even the LORD, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof. | 1The Mighty One, God, the LORD, speaks; he summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. |
Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined. | 2From Zion, the perfection of beauty, God appears in radiance. |
Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him. | 3Our God is coming; he will not be silent! Devouring fire precedes him, and a storm rages around him. |
He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people. | 4On high, he summons heaven and earth in order to judge his people: |
Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice. | 5"Gather my faithful ones to me, those who made a covenant with me by sacrifice." |
And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself. Selah. | 6The heavens proclaim his righteousness, for God is the Judge. Selah |
Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against thee: I am God, even thy God. | 7"Listen, my people, and I will speak; I will testify against you, Israel. I am God, your God. |
I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices or thy burnt offerings, to have been continually before me. | 8I do not rebuke you for your sacrifices or for your burnt offerings, which are continually before me. |
I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he goats out of thy folds. | 9I will not take a bull from your household or male goats from your pens, |
For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. | 10for every animal of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. |
I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine. | 11I know every bird of the mountains, and the creatures of the field are mine. |
If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof. | 12If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and everything in it is mine. |
Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats? | 13Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats? |
Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High: | 14Sacrifice a thank offering to God, and pay your vows to the Most High. |
And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me. | 15Call on me in a day of trouble; I will rescue you, and you will honor me." |
But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth? | 16But God says to the wicked: "What right do you have to recite my statutes and to take my covenant on your lips? |
Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee. | 17You hate instruction and fling my words behind you. |
When thou sawest a thief, then thou consentedst with him, and hast been partaker with adulterers. | 18When you see a thief, you make friends with him, and you associate with adulterers. |
Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit. | 19You unleash your mouth for evil and harness your tongue for deceit. |
Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother's son. | 20You sit, maligning your brother, slandering your mother's son. |
These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes. | 21You have done these things, and I kept silent; you thought I was just like you. But I will rebuke you and lay out the case before you. |
Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver. | 22"Understand this, you who forget God, or I will tear you apart, and there will be no one to rescue you. |
Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God. | 23Whoever sacrifices a thank offering honors me, and whoever orders his conduct, I will show him the salvation of God." |
