| 1Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal. It was flowing from the throne of God and the lamb. | 1Then the angel showed me a river with the water of life, clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb. |
| 2Between the city street and the river, the tree of life was visible from each side. It produced twelve kinds of fruit, each month having its own fruit. The leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. | 2It flowed down the center of the main street. On each side of the river grew a tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, with a fresh crop each month. The leaves were used for medicine to heal the nations. |
| 3There will no longer be any curse. The throne of God and the lamb will be in the city. His servants will worship him | 3No longer will there be a curse upon anything. For the throne of God and of the Lamb will be there, and his servants will worship him. |
| 4and see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. | 4And they will see his face, and his name will be written on their foreheads. |
| 5There will be no more night, and they will not need any light from lamps or the sun because the Lord God will shine on them. They will rule forever and ever. | 5And there will be no night there—no need for lamps or sun—for the Lord God will shine on them. And they will reign forever and ever. |
| 6He told me, "These words are trustworthy and true. The Lord God of the spirits and of the prophets has sent his messenger to show his servants the things that must happen soon." | 6Then the angel said to me, “Everything you have heard and seen is trustworthy and true. | 7"See! I am coming soon! How blessed is the person who keeps the words of the prophecy in this book!" | 7 “Look, I am coming soon! Blessed are those who obey the words of prophecy written in this book. ” |
| 8I, John, heard and saw these things. When I had heard and seen them, I bowed down to worship at the feet of the angel who had been showing me these things. | 8I, John, am the one who heard and saw all these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me. |
| 9But he told me, "Don't do that! I am a fellow servant with you, your brothers the prophets, and those who keep the words in this book. Worship God!" | 9But he said, “No, don’t worship me. I am a servant of God, just like you and your brothers the prophets, as well as all who obey what is written in this book. Worship only God!” |
| 10Then he told me, "Don't seal up the words of the prophecy in this book, because the time is near. | 10Then he instructed me, “Do not seal up the prophetic words in this book, for the time is near. |
| 11Let the one who does what is evil continue to do what is evil. Let the filthy person continue to be filthy. Let the righteous person continue to do what is right. And let the holy person continue to be holy." | 11Let the one who is doing harm continue to do harm; let the one who is vile continue to be vile; let the one who is righteous continue to live righteously; let the one who is holy continue to be holy.” |
| 12"See! I am coming soon! My reward is with me to repay everyone according to his behavior. | 12 “Look, I am coming soon, bringing my reward with me to repay all people according to their deeds. |
| 13I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. | 13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.” |
| 14"How blessed are those who wash their robes so that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city! | 14Blessed are those who wash their robes. They will be permitted to enter through the gates of the city and eat the fruit from the tree of life. |
| 15Outside are dogs, sorcerers, immoral people, murderers, idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices falsehood. | 15Outside the city are the dogs—the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idol worshipers, and all who love to live a lie. |
| 16"I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give this testimony to you for the churches. I am the root and descendent of David, the bright morning star." | 16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this message for the churches. I am both the source of David and the heir to his throne. I am the bright morning star.” |
| 17The Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" Let everyone who hears this say, "Come!" Let everyone who is thirsty come! Let anyone who wants the water of life take it as a gift! | 17The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” Let anyone who hears this say, “Come.” Let anyone who is thirsty come. Let anyone who desires drink freely from the water of life. |
| 18I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy in this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will strike him with the plagues that are written in this book. | 18And I solemnly declare to everyone who hears the words of prophecy written in this book: If anyone adds anything to what is written here, God will add to that person the plagues described in this book. |
| 19If anyone takes away any words from the book of this prophecy, God will take away his portion of the tree of life and the holy city that are described in this book. | 19And if anyone removes any of the words from this book of prophecy, God will remove that person’s share in the tree of life and in the holy city that are described in this book. |
| 20The one who is testifying to these things says, "Yes, I am coming soon!" Amen! Come, Lord Jesus! | 20He who is the faithful witness to all these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon!” Amen! Come, Lord Jesus! |
| 21May the grace of the Lord Jesus be with all the saints. Amen. | 21May the grace of the Lord Jesus be with God’s holy people. |
