International Standard Version | NET Bible |
Why do you stand far away, LORD? Why do you hide in times of distress? | 1Why, LORD, do you stand far off? Why do you pay no attention during times of trouble? |
The wicked one arrogantly pursues the afflicted, who are trapped in the schemes he devises. | 2The wicked arrogantly chase the oppressed; the oppressed are trapped by the schemes the wicked have dreamed up. |
For the wicked one boasts about his own desire; he blesses the greedy and despises the LORD. | 3Yes, the wicked man boasts because he gets what he wants; the one who robs others curses and rejects the LORD. |
With haughty arrogance, the wicked thinks, "God will not seek justice." He always presumes "There is no God." | 4The wicked man is so arrogant he always thinks, "God won't hold me accountable; he doesn't care." |
Their ways always seem prosperous. Your judgments are on high, far away from them. They scoff at all their enemies. | 5He is secure at all times. He has no regard for your commands; he disdains all his enemies. |
They say to themselves, "We will not be moved throughout all time, and we will not experience adversity." | 6He says to himself, "I will never be upended, because I experience no calamity." |
Their mouth is full of curses, lies, and oppression, their tongues spread trouble and iniquity. | 7His mouth is full of curses and deceptive, harmful words; his tongue injures and destroys. |
They wait in ambush in the villages, they kill the innocent in secret. | 8He waits in ambush near the villages; in hidden places he kills the innocent. His eyes look for some unfortunate victim. |
Their eyes secretly watch the helpless, lying in wait like a lion in his den. They lie in wait to catch the afflicted. They catch the afflicted when they pull him into their net. | 9He lies in ambush in a hidden place, like a lion in a thicket; he lies in ambush, waiting to catch the oppressed; he catches the oppressed by pulling in his net. |
The victim is crushed, and he sinks down; the helpless fall by their might. | 10His victims are crushed and beaten down; they are trapped in his sturdy nets. |
The wicked say to themselves, "God has forgotten, he has hidden his face, he will never see it." | 11He says to himself, "God overlooks it; he does not pay attention; he never notices." |
Rise up, LORD! Raise your hand, God. Don't forget the afflicted! | 12Rise up, LORD! O God, strike him down! Do not forget the oppressed! |
Why do the wicked despise God and say to themselves, "God will not seek justice."? | 13Why does the wicked man reject God? He says to himself, "You will not hold me accountable." |
But you do see! You take note of trouble and grief in order to take the matter into your own hand. The helpless one commits himself to you; you have been the orphan's helper. | 14You have taken notice, for you always see one who inflicts pain and suffering. The unfortunate victim entrusts his cause to you; you deliver the fatherless. |
Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; so that when you seek out his wickedness you will find it no more. | 15Break the arm of the wicked and evil man! Hold him accountable for his wicked deeds, which he thought you would not discover. |
The LORD is king forever and ever; nations will perish from his land. | 16The LORD rules forever! The nations are driven out of his land. |
LORD, you heard the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen them, you will listen carefully, | 17LORD, you have heard the request of the oppressed; you make them feel secure because you listen to their prayer. |
to do justice for the orphan and the oppressed, so that men of the earth may cause terror no more. | 18You defend the fatherless and oppressed, so that mere mortals may no longer terrorize them. |
