International Standard Version | New American Standard Bible 1995 |
Why do you stand far away, LORD? Why do you hide in times of distress? | 1Why do You stand afar off, O LORD? Why do You hide Yourself in times of trouble? |
The wicked one arrogantly pursues the afflicted, who are trapped in the schemes he devises. | 2In pride the wicked hotly pursue the afflicted; Let them be caught in the plots which they have devised. |
For the wicked one boasts about his own desire; he blesses the greedy and despises the LORD. | 3For the wicked boasts of his heart's desire, And the greedy man curses and spurns the LORD. |
With haughty arrogance, the wicked thinks, "God will not seek justice." He always presumes "There is no God." | 4The wicked, in the haughtiness of his countenance, does not seek Him. All his thoughts are, "There is no God." |
Their ways always seem prosperous. Your judgments are on high, far away from them. They scoff at all their enemies. | 5His ways prosper at all times; Your judgments are on high, out of his sight; As for all his adversaries, he snorts at them. |
They say to themselves, "We will not be moved throughout all time, and we will not experience adversity." | 6He says to himself, "I will not be moved; Throughout all generations I will not be in adversity." |
Their mouth is full of curses, lies, and oppression, their tongues spread trouble and iniquity. | 7His mouth is full of curses and deceit and oppression; Under his tongue is mischief and wickedness. |
They wait in ambush in the villages, they kill the innocent in secret. | 8He sits in the lurking places of the villages; In the hiding places he kills the innocent; His eyes stealthily watch for the unfortunate. |
Their eyes secretly watch the helpless, lying in wait like a lion in his den. They lie in wait to catch the afflicted. They catch the afflicted when they pull him into their net. | 9He lurks in a hiding place as a lion in his lair; He lurks to catch the afflicted; He catches the afflicted when he draws him into his net. |
The victim is crushed, and he sinks down; the helpless fall by their might. | 10He crouches, he bows down, And the unfortunate fall by his mighty ones. |
The wicked say to themselves, "God has forgotten, he has hidden his face, he will never see it." | 11He says to himself, "God has forgotten; He has hidden His face; He will never see it." |
Rise up, LORD! Raise your hand, God. Don't forget the afflicted! | 12Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up Your hand. Do not forget the afflicted. |
Why do the wicked despise God and say to themselves, "God will not seek justice."? | 13Why has the wicked spurned God? He has said to himself, "You will not require it." |
But you do see! You take note of trouble and grief in order to take the matter into your own hand. The helpless one commits himself to you; you have been the orphan's helper. | 14You have seen it, for You have beheld mischief and vexation to take it into Your hand. The unfortunate commits himself to You; You have been the helper of the orphan. |
Break the arm of the wicked and evil man; so that when you seek out his wickedness you will find it no more. | 15Break the arm of the wicked and the evildoer, Seek out his wickedness until You find none. |
The LORD is king forever and ever; nations will perish from his land. | 16The LORD is King forever and ever; Nations have perished from His land. |
LORD, you heard the desire of the afflicted; you will strengthen them, you will listen carefully, | 17O LORD, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will strengthen their heart, You will incline Your ear |
to do justice for the orphan and the oppressed, so that men of the earth may cause terror no more. | 18To vindicate the orphan and the oppressed, So that man who is of the earth will no longer cause terror. |
