This is what the LORD says: "For three transgressions of Moab because they cremated the bones of the king of Edom, burning them to lime.1This is what the LORD says: "Because Moab has committed three crimes--make that four!--I will not revoke my decree of judgment. They burned the bones of Edom's king into lime.
So I will send down fire upon Moab, and it will devour the fortified citadels of Kerioth. Moab will die in the uproar of battle, with a war cry and with the trumpeting of the ram's horn.2So I will set Moab on fire, and it will consume Kerioth's fortresses. Moab will perish in the heat of battle amid war cries and the blaring of the ram's horn.
I will execute their rulers among them, killing all of their officials as well," says the LORD.3I will remove Moab's leader; I will kill all Moab's officials with him." The LORD has spoken!
This is what the LORD says: "For three transgressions of Judah —and now for a fourth— I will not turn away; because they rejected the Law of the LORD and did not keep his statutes. Their own lies made them wander off, following along the same path their ancestors walked.4This is what the LORD says: "Because Judah has committed three covenant transgressions--make that four!--I will not revoke my decree of judgment. They rejected the LORD's law; they did not obey his commands. Their false gods, to which their fathers were loyal, led them astray.
So I will send down fire upon Judah, and it will devour the fortified citadels of Jerusalem."5So I will set Judah on fire, and it will consume Jerusalem's fortresses."
This is what the LORD says: "For three transgressions of Israel —and now for a fourth— I will not turn away; because they sold the righteous for money, and the poor for sandals,6This is what the LORD says: "Because Israel has committed three covenant transgressions--make that four!--I will not revoke my decree of judgment. They sold the innocent for silver, the needy for a pair of sandals.
moving quickly to rub the face of the needy in the dirt. Corrupting the ways of the humble, a man and his father go to the same woman, deliberately defiling my holy name.7They trample on the dirt-covered heads of the poor; they push the destitute away. A man and his father go to the same girl; in this way they show disrespect for my moral purity.
They lay down beside every altar, on garments pledged as collateral, drinking wine paid for through fines imposed by the temple of their gods.8They stretch out on clothing seized as collateral; they do so right beside every altar! They drink wine bought with the fines they have levied; they do so right in the temple of their God!
Yet it was I who destroyed the Amorites in front of them, though their height seemed like a cedar, though their strength seemed like an oak, but whose fruit I destroyed from above and the roots from beneath.9For Israel's sake I destroyed the Amorites. They were as tall as cedars and as strong as oaks, but I destroyed the fruit on their branches and their roots in the ground.
Furthermore, I brought you up from the land of Egypt, leading you in the wilderness for 40 years, to take possession of the land of the Amorites.10I brought you up from the land of Egypt; I led you through the wilderness for forty years so you could take the Amorites' land as your own.
I also raised up your sons to be prophets, and from your young men I raised up Nazirites. Is this not true, people of Israel?" declares the LORD.11I made some of your sons prophets and some of your young men Nazirites. Is this not true, you Israelites?" The LORD is speaking!
"But you forced the Nazirites to drink wine, and commanded the prophets, 'You are not to prophesy!'12"But you made the Nazirites drink wine; you commanded the prophets, 'Do not prophesy!'
"Oh, how I am burdened down with you, as a wagon is overloaded with harvested grain!13Look! I will press you down, like a cart loaded down with grain presses down.
So the swift runner will not escape, the valiant will not fortify his strength, and the mighty warrior will not save his life.14Fast runners will find no place to hide; strong men will have no strength left; warriors will not be able to save their lives.
The skilled archer will not be able to stand, the swift runner will not survive, and the mounted rider will not preserve his own life.15Archers will not hold their ground; fast runners will not save their lives, nor will those who ride horses.
Even the bravest of elite troops will run away naked at that time," declares the LORD.16Bravehearted warriors will run away naked in that day." The LORD is speaking!
