| 1About that time, Herod arrested some people who belonged to the church and mistreated them. | 1Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church. |
| 2He even had James, the brother of John, killed with a sword. | 2And he killed James the brother of John with the sword. |
| 3When he saw how this was agreeable to the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter, too. This happened during the Festival of Unleavened Bread. | 3And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.) |
| 4When he arrested Peter, Herod put him in prison and turned him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, planning to bring him out to the people after Passover season. | 4And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people. |
| 5So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer to God for him was being offered by the assembly. | 5Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him. |
| 6That very night, before Herod was going to bring him out, Peter, bound with two chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, and guards in front of the door were watching the prisoners. | 6And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison. |
| 7Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on his side, woke him up, and said, "Get up quickly!" His chains fell from his wrists. | 7And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands. |
| 8Then the angel told him, "Tuck in your shirt and put on your sandals!" He did this. Then the angel told him, "Put on your coat and follow me!" | 8And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me. |
| 9So Peter went out and began to follow him, not realizing that what was being done by the angel was real; he thought he was seeing a vision. | 9And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision. |
| 10They passed the first guard, then the second, and came to the iron gate that led into the city. It opened by itself for them, and they went outside and proceeded one block when the angel suddenly left him. | 10When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him. |
| 11Then Peter came to himself and said, "Now I'm sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from Herod and from everything the Jewish people were expecting!" | 11And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews. |
| 12When Peter realized what had happened, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John who was also called Mark, where a large number of people had gathered and were praying. | 12And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying. |
| 13When he knocked at the outer gate, a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer it. | 13And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda. |
| 14On recognizing Peter's voice, she was so overjoyed that she didn't open the gate but ran back inside and announced that Peter was standing at the gate. | 14And when she knew Peter's voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate. |
| 15The other people told her, "You're out of your mind!" But she kept insisting that it was so. Then they said, "It's his angel." | 15And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel. |
| 16Meanwhile, Peter kept on knocking and knocking. When they opened the gate, they saw him and were amazed. | 16But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished. |
| 17He motioned to them with his hand to be quiet, and then he told them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. He added, "Tell this to James and the brothers." Then he left and went somewhere else. | 17But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place. |
| 18When morning came, there was a great commotion among the soldiers as to what had become of Peter. | 18Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter. |
| 19Herod searched for him but didn't find him, so he questioned the guards and ordered them to be executed. Then he left Judea, went down to Caesarea, and stayed there for a while. | 19And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea, and there abode. |
| 20Now Herod had been in a violent quarrel with the people of Tyre and Sidon. So they came to him as a group. After they had won over Blastus, who oversaw security for the king's sleeping quarters, they asked for a peace agreement because their country depended on the king's country for food. | 20And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king's chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was nourished by the king's country. |
| 21Therefore, at a set time Herod put on his royal robes, sat down on the royal seat, and made a speech to them. | 21And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them. |
| 22The people kept shouting, "This is the voice of a god, not of a man!" | 22And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. |
| 23Immediately the angel of the Lord struck him down because he did not give glory to God, and he was eaten by worms and died. | 23And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost. |
| 24But the word of God continued to grow and spread. | 24But the word of God grew and multiplied. |
| 25When Barnabas and Saul had fulfilled their mission, they returned to Jerusalem, bringing with them John who was also called Mark. | 25And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them John, whose surname was Mark. |
