Proverbs 29
HCSB Parallel NLT [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
Holman Christian Standard BibleNew Living Translation
One who becomes stiff-necked, after many reprimands will be shattered instantly-- beyond recovery. 1Whoever stubbornly refuses to accept criticism will suddenly be destroyed beyond recovery.
When the righteous flourish, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, people groan. 2When the godly are in authority, the people rejoice. But when the wicked are in power, they groan.
A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father, but one who consorts with prostitutes destroys his wealth. 3The man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father, but if he hangs around with prostitutes, his wealth is wasted.
By justice a king brings stability to a land, but a man who demands "contributions" demolishes it. 4A just king gives stability to his nation, but one who demands bribes destroys it.
A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet. 5To flatter friends is to lay a trap for their feet.
An evil man is caught by sin, but the righteous one sings and rejoices. 6Evil people are trapped by sin, but the righteous escape, shouting for joy.
The righteous person knows the rights of the poor, but the wicked one does not understand these concerns. 7The godly care about the rights of the poor; the wicked don’t care at all.
Mockers inflame a city, but the wise turn away anger. 8Mockers can get a whole town agitated, but the wise will calm anger.
If a wise man goes to court with a fool, there will be ranting and raving but no resolution. 9If a wise person takes a fool to court, there will be ranting and ridicule but no satisfaction.
Bloodthirsty men hate an honest person, but the upright care about him. 10The bloodthirsty hate blameless people, but the upright seek to help them.
A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man holds it in check. 11Fools vent their anger, but the wise quietly hold it back.
If a ruler listens to lies, all his officials will be wicked. 12If a ruler pays attention to liars, all his advisers will be wicked.
The poor and the oppressor have this in common: the LORD gives light to the eyes of both. 13The poor and the oppressor have this in common— the LORD gives sight to the eyes of both.
A king who judges the poor with fairness-- his throne will be established forever. 14If a king judges the poor fairly, his throne will last forever.
A rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a youth left to himself is a disgrace to his mother. 15To discipline a child produces wisdom, but a mother is disgraced by an undisciplined child.
When the wicked increase, rebellion increases, but the righteous will see their downfall. 16When the wicked are in authority, sin flourishes, but the godly will live to see their downfall.
Discipline your son, and it will bring you peace of mind and give you delight. 17Discipline your children, and they will give you peace of mind and will make your heart glad.
Without revelation people run wild, but one who listens to instruction will be happy. 18When people do not accept divine guidance, they run wild. But whoever obeys the law is joyful.
A slave cannot be disciplined by words; though he understands, he doesn't respond. 19Words alone will not discipline a servant; the words may be understood, but they are not heeded.
Do you see a man who speaks too soon? There is more hope for a fool than for him. 20There is more hope for a fool than for someone who speaks without thinking.
A slave pampered from his youth will become arrogant later on. 21A servant pampered from childhood will become a rebel.
An angry man stirs up conflict, and a hot-tempered man increases rebellion. 22An angry person starts fights; a hot-tempered person commits all kinds of sin.
A person's pride will humble him, but a humble spirit will gain honor. 23Pride ends in humiliation, while humility brings honor.
To be a thief's partner is to hate oneself; he hears the curse but will not testify. 24If you assist a thief, you only hurt yourself. You are sworn to tell the truth, but you dare not testify.
The fear of man is a snare, but the one who trusts in the LORD is protected. 25Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the LORD means safety.
Many seek a ruler's favor, but a man receives justice from the LORD. 26Many seek the ruler’s favor, but justice comes from the LORD.
An unjust man is detestable to the righteous, and one whose way is upright is detestable to the wicked. 27The righteous despise the unjust; the wicked despise the godly.
