Holman Christian Standard BibleKing James Bible
One who becomes stiff-necked, after many reprimands will be shattered instantly-- beyond recovery. 1He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.
When the righteous flourish, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, people groan. 2When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.
A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father, but one who consorts with prostitutes destroys his wealth. 3Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance.
By justice a king brings stability to a land, but a man who demands "contributions" demolishes it. 4The king by judgment establisheth the land: but he that receiveth gifts overthroweth it.
A man who flatters his neighbor spreads a net for his feet. 5A man that flattereth his neighbour spreadeth a net for his feet.
An evil man is caught by sin, but the righteous one sings and rejoices. 6In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare: but the righteous doth sing and rejoice.
The righteous person knows the rights of the poor, but the wicked one does not understand these concerns. 7The righteous considereth the cause of the poor: but the wicked regardeth not to know it.
Mockers inflame a city, but the wise turn away anger. 8Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath.
If a wise man goes to court with a fool, there will be ranting and raving but no resolution. 9If a wise man contendeth with a foolish man, whether he rage or laugh, there is no rest.
Bloodthirsty men hate an honest person, but the upright care about him. 10The bloodthirsty hate the upright: but the just seek his soul.
A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man holds it in check. 11A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.
If a ruler listens to lies, all his officials will be wicked. 12If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked.
The poor and the oppressor have this in common: the LORD gives light to the eyes of both. 13The poor and the deceitful man meet together: the LORD lighteneth both their eyes.
A king who judges the poor with fairness-- his throne will be established forever. 14The king that faithfully judgeth the poor, his throne shall be established for ever.
A rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a youth left to himself is a disgrace to his mother. 15The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.
When the wicked increase, rebellion increases, but the righteous will see their downfall. 16When the wicked are multiplied, transgression increaseth: but the righteous shall see their fall.
Discipline your son, and it will bring you peace of mind and give you delight. 17Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.
Without revelation people run wild, but one who listens to instruction will be happy. 18Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.
A slave cannot be disciplined by words; though he understands, he doesn't respond. 19A servant will not be corrected by words: for though he understand he will not answer.
Do you see a man who speaks too soon? There is more hope for a fool than for him. 20Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.
A slave pampered from his youth will become arrogant later on. 21He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child shall have him become his son at the length.
An angry man stirs up conflict, and a hot-tempered man increases rebellion. 22An angry man stirreth up strife, and a furious man aboundeth in transgression.
A person's pride will humble him, but a humble spirit will gain honor. 23A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit.
To be a thief's partner is to hate oneself; he hears the curse but will not testify. 24Whoso is partner with a thief hateth his own soul: he heareth cursing, and bewrayeth it not.
The fear of man is a snare, but the one who trusts in the LORD is protected. 25The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.
Many seek a ruler's favor, but a man receives justice from the LORD. 26Many seek the ruler's favour; but every man's judgment cometh from the LORD.
An unjust man is detestable to the righteous, and one whose way is upright is detestable to the wicked. 27An unjust man is an abomination to the just: and he that is upright in the way is abomination to the wicked.
