Holman Christian Standard Bible | New Living Translation |
On the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark. She saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. | 1Early on Sunday morning, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. |
So she ran to Simon Peter and to the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don't know where they have put Him!" | 2She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved. She said, “They have taken the Lord’s body out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!” |
At that, Peter and the other disciple went out, heading for the tomb. | 3Peter and the other disciple started out for the tomb. |
The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and got to the tomb first. | 4They were both running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. |
Stooping down, he saw the linen cloths lying there, yet he did not go in. | 5He stooped and looked in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he didn’t go in. |
Then, following him, Simon Peter came also. He entered the tomb and saw the linen cloths lying there. | 6Then Simon Peter arrived and went inside. He also noticed the linen wrappings lying there, |
The wrapping that had been on His head was not lying with the linen cloths but was folded up in a separate place by itself. | 7while the cloth that had covered Jesus’ head was folded up and lying apart from the other wrappings. |
The other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, then entered the tomb, saw, and believed. | 8Then the disciple who had reached the tomb first also went in, and he saw and believed— |
For they still did not understand the Scripture that He must rise from the dead. | 9for until then they still hadn’t understood the Scriptures that said Jesus must rise from the dead. |
Then the disciples went home again. | 10Then they went home. Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene |
But Mary stood outside facing the tomb, crying. As she was crying, she stooped to look into the tomb. | 11Mary was standing outside the tomb crying, and as she wept, she stooped and looked in. |
She saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet, where Jesus' body had been lying. | 12She saw two white-robed angels, one sitting at the head and the other at the foot of the place where the body of Jesus had been lying. |
They said to her, "Woman, why are you crying?"" Because they've taken away my Lord," she told them, "and I don't know where they've put Him." | 13“Dear woman, why are you crying?” the angels asked her. “Because they have taken away my Lord,” she replied, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” |
Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, though she did not know it was Jesus. | 14She turned to leave and saw someone standing there. It was Jesus, but she didn’t recognize him. |
"Woman," Jesus said to her, "why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?" Supposing He was the gardener, she replied, "Sir, if you've removed Him, tell me where you've put Him, and I will take Him away." | 15 “Dear woman, why are you crying?” Jesus asked her. “Who are you looking for?” She thought he was the gardener. “Sir,” she said, “if you have taken him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will go and get him.” |
Jesus said, "Mary." Turning around, she said to Him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni!"--which means "Teacher." | 16 “Mary!” Jesus said. She turned to him and cried out, “Rabboni!” (which is Hebrew for “Teacher”). |
"Don't cling to Me," Jesus told her, "for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to My brothers and tell them that I am ascending to My Father and your Father--to My God and your God." | 17 “Don’t cling to me,” Jesus said, “for I haven’t yet ascended to the Father. But go find my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” |
Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord!" And she told them what He had said to her. | 18Mary Magdalene found the disciples and told them, “I have seen the Lord!” Then she gave them his message. Jesus Appears to His Disciples |
In the evening of that first day of the week, the disciples were gathered together with the doors locked because of their fear of the Jews. Then Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, "Peace to you!" | 19That Sunday evening the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them! “Peace be with you,” he said. |
Having said this, He showed them His hands and His side. So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. | 20As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his side. They were filled with joy when they saw the Lord! |
Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you." | 21Again he said, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.” |
After saying this, He breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. | 22Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. |
If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained." | 23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven. If you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” Jesus Appears to Thomas |
But one of the Twelve, Thomas (called "Twin"), was not with them when Jesus came. | 24One of the twelve disciples, Thomas (nicknamed the Twin), was not with the others when Jesus came. |
So the other disciples kept telling him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "If I don't see the mark of the nails in His hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will never believe!" | 25They told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he replied, “I won’t believe it unless I see the nail wounds in his hands, put my fingers into them, and place my hand into the wound in his side.” |
After eight days His disciples were indoors again, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them. He said, "Peace to you!" | 26Eight days later the disciples were together again, and this time Thomas was with them. The doors were locked; but suddenly, as before, Jesus was standing among them. “Peace be with you,” he said. |
Then He said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and observe My hands. Reach out your hand and put it into My side. Don't be an unbeliever, but a believer." | 27Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and look at my hands. Put your hand into the wound in my side. Don’t be faithless any longer. Believe!” |
Thomas responded to Him, "My Lord and my God!" | 28“My Lord and my God!” Thomas exclaimed. |
Jesus said, "Because you have seen Me, you have believed. Those who believe without seeing are blessed." | 29Then Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.” Purpose of the Book |
Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples that are not written in this book. | 30The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book. |
But these are written so that you may believe Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and by believing you may have life in His name. | 31But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name. |
