Holman Christian Standard BibleNew Living Translation
Now Joseph had been taken to Egypt. An Egyptian named Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh and the captain of the guard, bought him from the Ishmaelites who had brought him there. 1When Joseph was taken to Egypt by the Ishmaelite traders, he was purchased by Potiphar, an Egyptian officer. Potiphar was captain of the guard for Pharaoh, the king of Egypt.
The LORD was with Joseph, and he became a successful man, serving in the household of his Egyptian master. 2The LORD was with Joseph, so he succeeded in everything he did as he served in the home of his Egyptian master.
When his master saw that the LORD was with him and that the LORD made everything he did successful,3Potiphar noticed this and realized that the LORD was with Joseph, giving him success in everything he did.
Joseph found favor in his master's sight and became his personal attendant. Potiphar also put him in charge of his household and placed all that he owned under his authority.4This pleased Potiphar, so he soon made Joseph his personal attendant. He put him in charge of his entire household and everything he owned.
From the time that he put him in charge of his household and of all that he owned, the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house because of Joseph. The LORD's blessing was on all that he owned, in his house and in his fields. 5From the day Joseph was put in charge of his master’s household and property, the LORD began to bless Potiphar’s household for Joseph’s sake. All his household affairs ran smoothly, and his crops and livestock flourished.
He left all that he owned under Joseph's authority; he did not concern himself with anything except the food he ate. Now Joseph was well-built and handsome.6So Potiphar gave Joseph complete administrative responsibility over everything he owned. With Joseph there, he didn’t worry about a thing—except what kind of food to eat! Joseph was a very handsome and well-built young man,
After some time his master's wife looked longingly at Joseph and said, "Sleep with me." 7and Potiphar’s wife soon began to look at him lustfully. “Come and sleep with me,” she demanded.
But he refused. "Look," he said to his master's wife, "with me here my master does not concern himself with anything in his house, and he has put all that he owns under my authority.8But Joseph refused. “Look,” he told her, “my master trusts me with everything in his entire household.
No one in this house is greater than I am. He has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. So how could I do such a great evil and sin against God?" 9No one here has more authority than I do. He has held back nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How could I do such a wicked thing? It would be a great sin against God.”
Although she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her.10She kept putting pressure on Joseph day after day, but he refused to sleep with her, and he kept out of her way as much as possible.
Now one day he went into the house to do his work, and none of the household servants were there.11One day, however, no one else was around when he went in to do his work.
She grabbed him by his garment and said, "Sleep with me!" But leaving his garment in her hand, he escaped and ran outside. 12She came and grabbed him by his cloak, demanding, “Come on, sleep with me!” Joseph tore himself away, but he left his cloak in her hand as he ran from the house.
When she saw that he had left his garment with her and had run outside, 13When she saw that she was holding his cloak and he had fled,
she called the household servants. "Look," she said to them, "my husband brought a Hebrew man to make fools of us. He came to me so he could sleep with me, and I screamed as loud as I could.14she called out to her servants. Soon all the men came running. “Look!” she said. “My husband has brought this Hebrew slave here to make fools of us! He came into my room to rape me, but I screamed.
When he heard me screaming for help, he left his garment with me and ran outside." 15When he heard me scream, he ran outside and got away, but he left his cloak behind with me.”
She put Joseph's garment beside her until his master came home. 16She kept the cloak with her until her husband came home.
Then she told him the same story: "The Hebrew slave you brought to us came to make a fool of me, 17Then she told him her story. “That Hebrew slave you’ve brought into our house tried to come in and fool around with me,” she said.
but when I screamed for help, he left his garment with me and ran outside." 18“But when I screamed, he ran outside, leaving his cloak with me!” Joseph Put in Prison
When his master heard the story his wife told him--"These are the things your slave did to me"--he was furious19Potiphar was furious when he heard his wife’s story about how Joseph had treated her.
and had him thrown into prison, where the king's prisoners were confined. So Joseph was there in prison. 20So he took Joseph and threw him into the prison where the king’s prisoners were held, and there he remained.
But the LORD was with Joseph and extended kindness to him. He granted him favor in the eyes of the prison warden.21But the LORD was with Joseph in the prison and showed him his faithful love. And the LORD made Joseph a favorite with the prison warden.
The warden put all the prisoners who were in the prison under Joseph's authority, and he was responsible for everything that was done there. 22Before long, the warden put Joseph in charge of all the other prisoners and over everything that happened in the prison.
The warden did not bother with anything under Joseph's authority, because the LORD was with him, and the LORD made everything that he did successful. 23The warden had no more worries, because Joseph took care of everything. The LORD was with him and caused everything he did to succeed.
