Holman Christian Standard Bible | New International Version |
But you must say the things that are consistent with sound teaching. | 1You, however, must teach what is appropriate to sound doctrine. |
Older men are to be level headed, worthy of respect, sensible, and sound in faith, love, and endurance. | 2Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance. |
In the same way, older women are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not addicted to much wine. They are to teach what is good, | 3Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. |
so they may encourage the young women to love their husbands and to love their children, | 4Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, |
to be self-controlled, pure, homemakers, kind, and submissive to their husbands, so that God's message will not be slandered. | 5to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. |
In the same way, encourage the young men to be self-controlled | 6Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled. |
in everything. Make yourself an example of good works with integrity and dignity in your teaching. | 7In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness |
Your message is to be sound beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be ashamed, having nothing bad to say about us. | 8and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us. |
Slaves are to be submissive to their masters in everything, and to be well-pleasing, not talking back | 9Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, |
or stealing, but demonstrating utter faithfulness, so that they may adorn the teaching of God our Savior in everything. | 10and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive. |
For the grace of God has appeared with salvation for all people, | 11For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. |
instructing us to deny godlessness and worldly lusts and to live in a sensible, righteous, and godly way in the present age, | 12It teaches us to say "No" to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, |
while we wait for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. | 13while we wait for the blessed hope--the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, |
He gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for Himself a people for His own possession, eager to do good works. | 14who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good. |
Say these things, and encourage and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you. | 15These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you. |
