Holman Christian Standard Bible | English Standard Version |
But you must say the things that are consistent with sound teaching. | 1But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. |
Older men are to be level headed, worthy of respect, sensible, and sound in faith, love, and endurance. | 2Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. |
In the same way, older women are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not addicted to much wine. They are to teach what is good, | 3Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, |
so they may encourage the young women to love their husbands and to love their children, | 4and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, |
to be self-controlled, pure, homemakers, kind, and submissive to their husbands, so that God's message will not be slandered. | 5to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. |
In the same way, encourage the young men to be self-controlled | 6Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. |
in everything. Make yourself an example of good works with integrity and dignity in your teaching. | 7Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, |
Your message is to be sound beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be ashamed, having nothing bad to say about us. | 8and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us. |
Slaves are to be submissive to their masters in everything, and to be well-pleasing, not talking back | 9Bondservants are to be submissive to their own masters in everything; they are to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, |
or stealing, but demonstrating utter faithfulness, so that they may adorn the teaching of God our Savior in everything. | 10not pilfering, but showing all good faith, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior. |
For the grace of God has appeared with salvation for all people, | 11For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, |
instructing us to deny godlessness and worldly lusts and to live in a sensible, righteous, and godly way in the present age, | 12training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, |
while we wait for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. | 13waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, |
He gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for Himself a people for His own possession, eager to do good works. | 14who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works. |
Say these things, and encourage and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you. | 15Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you. |
