Holman Christian Standard Bible | King James Bible |
But you must say the things that are consistent with sound teaching. | 1But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: |
Older men are to be level headed, worthy of respect, sensible, and sound in faith, love, and endurance. | 2That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. |
In the same way, older women are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not addicted to much wine. They are to teach what is good, | 3The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; |
so they may encourage the young women to love their husbands and to love their children, | 4That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, |
to be self-controlled, pure, homemakers, kind, and submissive to their husbands, so that God's message will not be slandered. | 5To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. |
In the same way, encourage the young men to be self-controlled | 6Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. |
in everything. Make yourself an example of good works with integrity and dignity in your teaching. | 7In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, |
Your message is to be sound beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be ashamed, having nothing bad to say about us. | 8Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. |
Slaves are to be submissive to their masters in everything, and to be well-pleasing, not talking back | 9Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; |
or stealing, but demonstrating utter faithfulness, so that they may adorn the teaching of God our Savior in everything. | 10Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. |
For the grace of God has appeared with salvation for all people, | 11For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, |
instructing us to deny godlessness and worldly lusts and to live in a sensible, righteous, and godly way in the present age, | 12Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; |
while we wait for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. | 13Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; |
He gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for Himself a people for His own possession, eager to do good works. | 14Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. |
Say these things, and encourage and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you. | 15These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee. |
