Holman Christian Standard Bible | English Standard Version |
We must, therefore, pay even more attention to what we have heard, so that we will not drift away. | 1Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. |
For if the message spoken through angels was legally binding and every transgression and disobedience received a just punishment, | 2For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, |
how will we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was first spoken by the Lord and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him. | 3how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, |
At the same time, God also testified by signs and wonders, various miracles, and distributions of gifts from the Holy Spirit according to His will. | 4while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. |
For He has not subjected to angels the world to come that we are talking about. | 5For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. |
But one has somewhere testified: What is man that You remember him, or the son of man that You care for him? | 6It has been testified somewhere, “What is man, that you are mindful of him, or the son of man, that you care for him? |
You made him lower than the angels for a short time; You crowned him with glory and honor | 7You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, |
and subjected everything under his feet. For in subjecting everything to him, He left nothing that is not subject to him. As it is, we do not yet see everything subjected to him. | 8putting everything in subjection under his feet.” Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. |
But we do see Jesus--made lower than the angels for a short time so that by God's grace He might taste death for everyone--crowned with glory and honor because of His suffering in death. | 9But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. |
For in bringing many sons to glory, it was entirely appropriate that God--all things exist for Him and through Him--should make the source of their salvation perfect through sufferings. | 10For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. |
For the One who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers, | 11For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, |
saying: I will proclaim Your name to My brothers; I will sing hymns to You in the congregation. | 12saying, “I will tell of your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.” |
Again, I will trust in Him. And again, Here I am with the children God gave Me. | 13And again, “I will put my trust in him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children God has given me.” |
Now since the children have flesh and blood in common, Jesus also shared in these, so that through His death He might destroy the one holding the power of death--that is, the Devil-- | 14Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, |
and free those who were held in slavery all their lives by the fear of death. | 15and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. |
For it is clear that He does not reach out to help angels, but to help Abraham's offspring. | 16For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. |
Therefore, He had to be like His brothers in every way, so that He could become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. | 17Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. |
For since He Himself was tested and has suffered, He is able to help those who are tested. | 18For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. |
