The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel: | 1The proverbs of David's son Solomon, king of Israel. |
To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, | 2These proverbs are for gaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; |
to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity; | 3for acquiring the discipline that produces wise behavior, righteousness, justice, and upright living; |
to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth— | 4for giving prudence to the naïve, and knowledge and discretion to the young. |
Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance, | 5Let the wise listen and increase their learning; let the person of understanding receive guidance |
to understand a proverb and a saying, the words of the wise and their riddles. | 6in understanding proverbs, clever sayings, words of the wise, and their riddles. |
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. | 7The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. |
Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching, | 8My son, listen to your father's instruction, and do not let go of your mother's teaching. |
for they are a graceful garland for your head and pendants for your neck. | 9They will be a graceful wreath for your head and a chain for your neck. |
My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent. | 10My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent. |
If they say, “Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood; let us ambush the innocent without reason; | 11If they say, "Come with us! Let's lie in wait for blood; let's ambush some innocent person for no reason at all. |
like Sheol let us swallow them alive, and whole, like those who go down to the pit; | 12Let's swallow them alive like Sheol, and whole like those who go down into the Pit. |
we shall find all precious goods, we shall fill our houses with plunder; | 13We'll find all kinds of valuable wealth, and we'll fill our houses with spoil. |
throw in your lot among us; we will all have one purse”— | 14Throw your lot in with us, and all of us will have one purse." |
my son, do not walk in the way with them; hold back your foot from their paths, | 15My son, do not go along with them, and keep your feet away from their paths! |
for their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed blood. | 16For they run toward evil; these enticers shed blood without hesitation. |
For in vain is a net spread in the sight of any bird, | 17Look, it is useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds, |
but these men lie in wait for their own blood; they set an ambush for their own lives. | 18but these people lie in wait for their own blood. They ambush only themselves. |
Such are the ways of everyone who is greedy for unjust gain; it takes away the life of its possessors. | 19Such is the way of all those who seek illicit gain— it takes away the lives of those who possess it. |
Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice; | 20Wisdom cries out in the street; she raises her voice in the public squares. |
at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks: | 21She calls out at the busiest part of the noisy streets, and at the entrance to the gates of the city she utters her words: |
“How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge? | 22"You naïve ones, how long will you love naivete? And how long will scoffers delight in scoffing or fools hate knowledge?" |
If you turn at my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit to you; I will make my words known to you. | 23Return to my correction! Look, I will pour out my spirit on you, and I will make my words known to you. |
Because I have called and you refused to listen, have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded, | 24"Because I called out to you and you refused to respond— I appealed, but no one paid attention— |
because you have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof, | 25because you neglected all my advice and did not want my correction, |
I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when terror strikes you, | 26I will laugh at your calamity. I will mock when what you fear comes, |
when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you. | 27when what you dread comes like a storm, and your calamity comes on like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you. |
Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently but will not find me. | 28"Then they will call out to me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently, but they will not find me. |
Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD, | 29"Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD; |
would have none of my counsel and despised all my reproof, | 30they did not want my advice, and they rejected all my correction. |
therefore they shall eat the fruit of their way, and have their fill of their own devices. | 31They will eat the fruit of their way, and they will be filled with their own devices. |
For the simple are killed by their turning away, and the complacency of fools destroys them; | 32Indeed, the waywardness of the naïve will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them. |
but whoever listens to me will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.” | 33"But the person who listens to me will live safely and will be secure from the fear of evil." |
