| 1And Hannah prayed and said, “My heart exults in the LORD; my horn is exalted in the LORD. My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation. | 1Hannah prayed: My heart rejoices in the LORD; my horn is lifted up by the LORD. My mouth boasts over my enemies, because I rejoice in Your salvation. |
| 2“There is none holy like the LORD: for there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God. | 2There is no one holy like the LORD. There is no one besides You! And there is no rock like our God. |
| 3Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth; for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. | 3Do not boast so proudly, or let arrogant words come out of your mouth, for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and actions are weighed by Him. |
| 4The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble bind on strength. | 4The bows of the warriors are broken, but the feeble are clothed with strength. |
| 5Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry have ceased to hunger. The barren has borne seven, but she who has many children is forlorn. | 5Those who are full hire themselves out for food, but those who are starving hunger no more. The woman who is childless gives birth to seven, but the woman with many sons pines away. |
| 6The LORD kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up. | 6The LORD brings death and gives life; He sends some to Sheol, and He raises others up. |
| 7The LORD makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts. | 7The LORD brings poverty and gives wealth; He humbles and He exalts. |
| 8He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth are the LORD’s, and on them he has set the world. | 8He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the garbage pile. | 9“He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness, for not by might shall a man prevail. | 9He guards the steps of His faithful ones, but the wicked perish in darkness, for a man does not prevail by his own strength. |
| 10The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; against them he will thunder in heaven. The LORD will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed.” | 10Those who oppose the LORD will be shattered; He will thunder in the heavens against them. | 11Then Elkanah went home to Ramah. And the boy was ministering to the LORD in the presence of Eli the priest. | 11Elkanah went home to Ramah, but the boy served the LORD in the presence of Eli the priest. |
| 12Now the sons of Eli were worthless men. They did not know the LORD. | 12Eli's sons were wicked men; they had no regard for the LORD |
| 13The custom of the priests with the people was that when any man offered sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come, while the meat was boiling, with a three-pronged fork in his hand, | 13or for the priests' share of the sacrifices from the people. When any man offered a sacrifice, the priest's servant would come with a three-pronged meat fork while the meat was boiling |
| 14and he would thrust it into the pan or kettle or cauldron or pot. All that the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is what they did at Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there. | 14and plunge it into the container or kettle or cauldron or cooking pot. The priest would claim for himself whatever the meat fork brought up. This is the way they treated all the Israelites who came there to Shiloh. |
| 15Moreover, before the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, “Give meat for the priest to roast, for he will not accept boiled meat from you but only raw.” | 15Even before the fat was burned, the priest's servant would come and say to the man who was sacrificing, "Give the priest some meat to roast, because he won't accept boiled meat from you--only raw." |
| 16And if the man said to him, “Let them burn the fat first, and then take as much as you wish,” he would say, “No, you must give it now, and if not, I will take it by force.” | 16If that man said to him, "The fat must be burned first; then you can take whatever you want for yourself," the servant would reply, "No, I insist that you hand it over right now. If you don't, I'll take it by force!" |
| 17Thus the sin of the young men was very great in the sight of the LORD, for the men treated the offering of the LORD with contempt. | 17So the servants' sin was very severe in the presence of the LORD, because they treated the LORD's offering with contempt. |
| 18Samuel was ministering before the LORD, a boy clothed with a linen ephod. | 18The boy Samuel served in the LORD's presence and wore a linen ephod. |
| 19And his mother used to make for him a little robe and take it to him each year when she went up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice. | 19Each year his mother made him a little robe and took it to him when she went with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice. |
| 20Then Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, “May the LORD give you children by this woman for the petition she asked of the LORD.” So then they would return to their home. | 20Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife: "May the LORD give you children by this woman in place of the one she has given to the LORD." Then they would go home. |
| 21Indeed the LORD visited Hannah, and she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. And the boy Samuel grew in the presence of the LORD. | 21The LORD paid attention to Hannah's need, and she conceived and gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD. |
| 22Now Eli was very old, and he kept hearing all that his sons were doing to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who were serving at the entrance to the tent of meeting. | 22Now Eli was very old. He heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they were sleeping with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting. |
| 23And he said to them, “Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all these people. | 23He said to them, "Why are you doing these things? I have heard about your evil actions from all these people. |
| 24No, my sons; it is no good report that I hear the people of the LORD spreading abroad. | 24No, my sons, the report I hear from the LORD's people is not good. |
| 25If someone sins against a man, God will mediate for him, but if someone sins against the LORD, who can intercede for him?” But they would not listen to the voice of their father, for it was the will of the LORD to put them to death. | 25If a man sins against another man, God can intercede for him, but if a man sins against the LORD, who can intercede for him?" But they would not listen to their father, since the LORD intended to kill them. |
| 26Now the boy Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the LORD and also with man. | 26By contrast, the boy Samuel grew in stature and in favor with the LORD and with men. |
| 27And there came a man of God to Eli and said to him, “Thus says the LORD, ‘Did I indeed reveal myself to the house of your father when they were in Egypt subject to the house of Pharaoh? | 27A man of God came to Eli and said to him, "This is what the LORD says: 'Didn't I reveal Myself to your ancestral house when it was in Egypt and belonged to Pharaoh's palace? |
| 28Did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? I gave to the house of your father all my offerings by fire from the people of Israel. | 28Out of all the tribes of Israel, I selected your house to be priests, to offer sacrifices on My altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod in My presence. I also gave your house all the Israelite fire offerings. |
| 29Why then do you scorn my sacrifices and my offerings that I commanded for my dwelling, and honor your sons above me by fattening yourselves on the choicest parts of every offering of my people Israel?’ | 29Why, then, do all of you despise My sacrifices and offerings that I require at the place of worship? You have honored your sons more than Me, by making yourselves fat with the best part of all of the offerings of My people Israel.' |
| 30Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: ‘I promised that your house and the house of your father should go in and out before me forever,’ but now the LORD declares: ‘Far be it from me, for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed. | 30"Therefore, this is the declaration of the LORD, the God of Israel: 'Although I said your family and your ancestral house would walk before Me forever, the LORD now says, "No longer!" I will honor those who honor Me, but those who despise Me will be disgraced. |
| 31Behold, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your father’s house, so that there will not be an old man in your house. | 31" 'Look, the days are coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your ancestral family, so that none in your family will reach old age. |
| 32Then in distress you will look with envious eye on all the prosperity that shall be bestowed on Israel, and there shall not be an old man in your house forever. | 32You will see distress in the place of worship, in spite of all that is good in Israel, and no one in your family will ever again reach old age. |
| 33The only one of you whom I shall not cut off from my altar shall be spared to weep his eyes out to grieve his heart, and all the descendants of your house shall die by the sword of men. | 33Any man from your family I do not cut off from My altar will bring grief and sadness to you. All your descendants will die violently. |
| 34And this that shall come upon your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, shall be the sign to you: both of them shall die on the same day. | 34This will be the sign that will come to you concerning your two sons Hophni and Phinehas: both of them will die on the same day. |
| 35And I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who shall do according to what is in my heart and in my mind. And I will build him a sure house, and he shall go in and out before my anointed forever. | 35" 'Then I will raise up a faithful priest for Myself. He will do whatever is in My heart and mind. I will establish a lasting dynasty for him, and he will walk before My anointed one for all time. |
| 36And everyone who is left in your house shall come to implore him for a piece of silver or a loaf of bread and shall say, “Please put me in one of the priests’ places, that I may eat a morsel of bread.”’” | 36Anyone who is left in your family will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver or a loaf of bread. He will say: Please appoint me to some priestly office so I can have a piece of bread to eat.'" |
