In the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by the hand of Haggai the prophet: | 1On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai: |
“Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to all the remnant of the people, and say, | 2"Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and to the remnant of the people: |
‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Is it not as nothing in your eyes? | 3'Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Doesn't it seem to you like nothing by comparison? |
Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the LORD. Be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the LORD. Work, for I am with you, declares the LORD of hosts, | 4Even so, be strong, Zerubbabel--this is the LORD's declaration. Be strong, Joshua son of Jehozadak, high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land--this is the LORD's declaration. Work! For I am with you--the declaration of the LORD of Armies. |
according to the covenant that I made with you when you came out of Egypt. My Spirit remains in your midst. Fear not. | 5This is the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt, and my Spirit is present among you; don't be afraid.'" |
For thus says the LORD of hosts: Yet once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land. | 6For the LORD of Armies says this: "Once more, in a little while, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. |
And I will shake all nations, so that the treasures of all nations shall come in, and I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of hosts. | 7I will shake all the nations so that the treasures of all the nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory," says the LORD of Armies. |
The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the LORD of hosts. | 8"The silver and gold belong to me"--this is the declaration of the LORD of Armies. |
The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, says the LORD of hosts. And in this place I will give peace, declares the LORD of hosts.’” | 9"The final glory of this house will be greater than the first," says the LORD of Armies. "I will provide peace in this place"--this is the declaration of the LORD of Armies. |
On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, | 10On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Haggai: |
“Thus says the LORD of hosts: Ask the priests about the law: | 11"This is what the LORD of Armies says: Ask the priests for a ruling. |
‘If someone carries holy meat in the fold of his garment and touches with his fold bread or stew or wine or oil or any kind of food, does it become holy?’” The priests answered and said, “No.” | 12If a man is carrying consecrated meat in the fold of his garment, and it touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any other food, does it become holy?" The priests answered, "No." |
Then Haggai said, “If someone who is unclean by contact with a dead body touches any of these, does it become unclean?” The priests answered and said, “It does become unclean.” | 13Then Haggai asked, "If someone defiled by contact with a corpse touches any of these, does it become defiled?" The priests answered, "It becomes defiled." |
Then Haggai answered and said, “So is it with this people, and with this nation before me, declares the LORD, and so with every work of their hands. And what they offer there is unclean. | 14Then Haggai replied, "So is this people, and so is this nation before me--this is the LORD's declaration. And so is every work of their hands; even what they offer there is defiled. |
Now then, consider from this day onward. Before stone was placed upon stone in the temple of the LORD, | 15"Now from this day on, think carefully: Before one stone was placed on another in the LORD's temple, |
how did you fare? When one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were but ten. When one came to the wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were but twenty. | 16what state were you in? When someone came to a grain heap of twenty measures, it only amounted to ten; when one came to the winepress to dip fifty measures from the vat, it only amounted to twenty. |
I struck you and all the products of your toil with blight and with mildew and with hail, yet you did not turn to me, declares the LORD. | 17I struck you--all the work of your hands--with blight, mildew, and hail, but you didn't turn to me--this is the LORD's declaration. |
Consider from this day onward, from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month. Since the day that the foundation of the LORD’s temple was laid, consider: | 18"From this day on, think carefully; from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, from the day the foundation of the LORD's temple was laid; think carefully. |
Is the seed yet in the barn? Indeed, the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have yielded nothing. But from this day on I will bless you.” | 19Is there still seed left in the granary? The vine, the fig, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not yet produced. But from this day on I will bless you." |
The word of the LORD came a second time to Haggai on the twenty-fourth day of the month, | 20The word of the LORD came to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month: |
“Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I am about to shake the heavens and the earth, | 21"Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah: I am going to shake the heavens and the earth. |
and to overthrow the throne of kingdoms. I am about to destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the nations, and overthrow the chariots and their riders. And the horses and their riders shall go down, every one by the sword of his brother. | 22I will overturn royal thrones and destroy the power of the Gentile kingdoms. I will overturn chariots and their riders. Horses and their riders will fall, each by his brother's sword. |
On that day, declares the LORD of hosts, I will take you, O Zerubbabel my servant, the son of Shealtiel, declares the LORD, and make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you, declares the LORD of hosts.” | 23On that day"--this is the declaration of the LORD of Armies--"I will take you, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, my servant"--this is the LORD's declaration--"and make you like my signet ring, for I have chosen you." This is the declaration of the LORD of Armies. |
