Christian Standard Bible | New International Version |
First of all, then, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, | 1I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people-- |
for kings and all those who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. | 2for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. |
This is good, and it pleases God our Savior, | 3This is good, and pleases God our Savior, |
who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. | 4who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. |
For there is one God and one mediator between God and humanity, the man Christ Jesus, | 5For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, |
who gave himself as a ransom for all, a testimony at the proper time. | 6who gave himself as a ransom for all people. This has now been witnessed to at the proper time. |
For this I was appointed a herald, an apostle (I am telling the truth; I am not lying), and a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. | 7And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle--I am telling the truth, I am not lying--and a true and faithful teacher of the Gentiles. |
Therefore, I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or argument. | 8Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing. |
Also, the women are to dress themselves in modest clothing, with decency and good sense, not with elaborate hairstyles, gold, pearls, or expensive apparel, | 9I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, |
but with good works, as is proper for women who profess to worship God. | 10but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God. |
A woman is to learn quietly with full submission. | 11A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. |
I do not allow a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; instead, she is to remain quiet. | 12I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. |
For Adam was formed first, then Eve. | 13For Adam was formed first, then Eve. |
And Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and transgressed. | 14And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. |
But she will be saved through childbearing, if they continue in faith, love, and holiness, with good sense. | 15But women will be saved through childbearing--if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety. |
