| 1God, you are my God; I eagerly seek you. I thirst for you; my body faints for you in a land that is dry, desolate, and without water. | 1A psalm of David, written when he was in the Judean wilderness. O God, you are my God! I long for you! My soul thirsts for you, my flesh yearns for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. |
| 2So I gaze on you in the sanctuary to see your strength and your glory. | 2Yes, in the sanctuary I have seen you, and witnessed your power and splendor. |
| 3My lips will glorify you because your faithful love is better than life. | 3Because experiencing your loyal love is better than life itself, my lips will praise you. |
| 4So I will bless you as long as I live; at your name, I will lift up my hands. | 4For this reason I will praise you while I live; in your name I will lift up my hands. |
| 5You satisfy me as with rich food; my mouth will praise you with joyful lips. | 5As if with choice meat you satisfy my soul. My mouth joyfully praises you, |
| 6When I think of you as I lie on my bed, I meditate on you during the night watches | 6whenever I remember you on my bed, and think about you during the nighttime hours. |
| 7because you are my helper; I will rejoice in the shadow of your wings. | 7For you are my deliverer; under your wings I rejoice. |
| 8I follow close to you; your right hand holds on to me. | 8My soul pursues you; your right hand upholds me. |
| 9But those who intend to destroy my life will go into the depths of the earth. | 9Enemies seek to destroy my life, but they will descend into the depths of the earth. |
| 10They will be given over to the power of the sword; they will become a meal for jackals. | 10Each one will be handed over to the sword; their corpses will be eaten by jackals. |
| 11But the king will rejoice in God; all who swear by him will boast, for the mouths of liars will be shut. | 11But the king will rejoice in God; everyone who takes oaths in his name will boast, for the mouths of those who speak lies will be shut up. |
