Call out! Will anyone answer you? Which of the holy ones will you turn to? | 1"Call now, is there anyone who will answer you? And to which of the holy ones will you turn? |
For anger kills a fool, and jealousy slays the gullible. | 2"For anger slays the foolish man, And jealousy kills the simple. |
I have seen a fool taking root, but I immediately pronounced a curse on his home. | 3"I have seen the foolish taking root, And I cursed his abode immediately. |
His children are far from safety. They are crushed at the city gate, with no one to rescue them. | 4"His sons are far from safety, They are even oppressed in the gate, And there is no deliverer. |
The hungry consume his harvest, even taking it out of the thorns. The thirsty pant for his children's wealth. | 5"His harvest the hungry devour And take it to a place of thorns, And the schemer is eager for their wealth. |
For distress does not grow out of the soil, and trouble does not sprout from the ground. | 6"For affliction does not come from the dust, Nor does trouble sprout from the ground, |
But humans are born for trouble as surely as sparks fly upward. | 7For man is born for trouble, As sparks fly upward. |
However, if I were you, I would appeal to God and would present my case to him. | 8"But as for me, I would seek God, And I would place my cause before God; |
He does great and unsearchable things, wonders without number. | 9Who does great and unsearchable things, Wonders without number. |
He gives rain to the earth and sends water to the fields. | 10"He gives rain on the earth And sends water on the fields, |
He sets the lowly on high, and mourners are lifted to safety. | 11So that He sets on high those who are lowly, And those who mourn are lifted to safety. |
He frustrates the schemes of the crafty so that they achieve no success. | 12"He frustrates the plotting of the shrewd, So that their hands cannot attain success. |
He traps the wise in their craftiness so that the plans of the deceptive are quickly brought to an end. | 13"He captures the wise by their own shrewdness, And the advice of the cunning is quickly thwarted. |
They encounter darkness by day, and they grope at noon as if it were night. | 14"By day they meet with darkness, And grope at noon as in the night. |
He saves the needy from their sharp words and from the clutches of the powerful. | 15"But He saves from the sword of their mouth, And the poor from the hand of the mighty. |
So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts its mouth. | 16"So the helpless has hope, And unrighteousness must shut its mouth. |
See how happy is the person whom God corrects; so do not reject the discipline of the Almighty. | 17"Behold, how happy is the man whom God reproves, So do not despise the discipline of the Almighty. |
For he wounds but he also bandages; he strikes, but his hands also heal. | 18"For He inflicts pain, and gives relief; He wounds, and His hands also heal. |
He will rescue you from six calamities; no harm will touch you in seven. | 19"From six troubles He will deliver you, Even in seven evil will not touch you. |
In famine he will redeem you from death, and in battle, from the power of the sword. | 20"In famine He will redeem you from death, And in war from the power of the sword. |
You will be safe from slander and not fear destruction when it comes. | 21"You will be hidden from the scourge of the tongue, And you will not be afraid of violence when it comes. |
You will laugh at destruction and hunger and not fear the land's wild creatures. | 22"You will laugh at violence and famine, And you will not be afraid of wild beasts. |
For you will have a covenant with the stones of the field, and the wild animals will be at peace with you. | 23"For you will be in league with the stones of the field, And the beasts of the field will be at peace with you. |
You will know that your tent is secure, and nothing will be missing when you inspect your home. | 24"You will know that your tent is secure, For you will visit your abode and fear no loss. |
You will also know that your offspring will be many and your descendants like the grass of the earth. | 25"You will know also that your descendants will be many, And your offspring as the grass of the earth. |
You will approach the grave in full vigor, as a stack of sheaves is gathered in its season. | 26"You will come to the grave in full vigor, Like the stacking of grain in its season. |
We have investigated this, and it is true! Hear it and understand it for yourself. | 27"Behold this; we have investigated it, and so it is. Hear it, and know for yourself." |
