| 1Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev--he, his wife, and all he had, and Lot with him. | 1So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, he and his wife and all that belonged to him, and Lot with him. |
| 2Abram was very rich in livestock, silver, and gold. | 2Now Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver and in gold. |
| 3He went by stages from the Negev to Bethel, to the place between Bethel and Ai where his tent had formerly been, | 3He went on his journeys from the Negev as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai, |
| 4to the site where he had built the altar. And Abram called on the name of the LORD there. | 4to the place of the altar which he had made there formerly; and there Abram called on the name of the LORD. |
| 5Now Lot, who was traveling with Abram, also had flocks, herds, and tents. | 5Now Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents. |
| 6But the land was unable to support them as long as they stayed together, for they had so many possessions that they could not stay together, | 6And the land could not sustain them while dwelling together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to remain together. |
| 7and there was quarreling between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and the herdsmen of Lot's livestock. (At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land.) | 7And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and the herdsmen of Lot's livestock. Now the Canaanite and the Perizzite were dwelling then in the land. |
| 8So Abram said to Lot, "Please, let's not have quarreling between you and me, or between your herdsmen and my herdsmen, since we are relatives. | 8So Abram said to Lot, "Please let there be no strife between you and me, nor between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are brothers. |
| 9Isn't the whole land before you? Separate from me: if you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left." | 9"Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me; if to the left, then I will go to the right; or if to the right, then I will go to the left." |
| 10Lot looked out and saw that the entire plain of the Jordan as far as Zoar was well watered everywhere like the LORD's garden and the land of Egypt. (This was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) | 10Lot lifted up his eyes and saw all the valley of the Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere-- this was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah-- like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt as you go to Zoar. |
| 11So Lot chose the entire plain of the Jordan for himself. Then Lot journeyed eastward, and they separated from each other. | 11So Lot chose for himself all the valley of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed eastward. Thus they separated from each other. |
| 12Abram lived in the land of Canaan, but Lot lived in the cities on the plain and set up his tent near Sodom. | 12Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled in the cities of the valley, and moved his tents as far as Sodom. |
| 13(Now the men of Sodom were evil, sinning immensely against the LORD.) | 13Now the men of Sodom were wicked exceedingly and sinners against the LORD. |
| 14After Lot had separated from him, the LORD said to Abram, "Look from the place where you are. Look north and south, east and west, | 14The LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, "Now lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward; |
| 15for I will give you and your offspring forever all the land that you see. | 15for all the land which you see, I will give it to you and to your descendants forever. |
| 16I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust of the earth, then your offspring could be counted. | 16"I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth, so that if anyone can number the dust of the earth, then your descendants can also be numbered. |
| 17Get up and walk around the land, through its length and width, for I will give it to you." | 17"Arise, walk about the land through its length and breadth; for I will give it to you." |
| 18So Abram moved his tent and went to live near the oaks of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an altar to the LORD. | 18Then Abram moved his tent and came and dwelt by the oaks of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and there he built an altar to the LORD. |
