And I saw a beast coming up out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads. On its horns were ten crowns, and on its heads were blasphemous names. | 1And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy. |
The beast I saw was like a leopard, its feet were like a bear's, and its mouth was like a lion's mouth. The dragon gave the beast his power, his throne, and great authority. | 2And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority. |
One of its heads appeared to be fatally wounded, but its fatal wound was healed. The whole earth was amazed and followed the beast. | 3And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast. |
They worshiped the dragon because he gave authority to the beast. And they worshiped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast? Who is able to wage war against it?" | 4And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him? |
The beast was given a mouth to utter boasts and blasphemies. It was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. | 5And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months. |
It began to speak blasphemies against God: to blaspheme his name and his dwelling--those who dwell in heaven. | 6And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven. |
And it was permitted to wage war against the saints and to conquer them. It was also given authority over every tribe, people, language, and nation. | 7And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations. |
All those who live on the earth will worship it, everyone whose name was not written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who was slaughtered. | 8And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. |
If anyone has ears to hear, let him listen. | 9If any man have an ear, let him hear. |
If anyone is to be taken captive, into captivity he goes. If anyone is to be killed with a sword, with a sword he will be killed. This calls for endurance and faithfulness from the saints. | 10He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints. |
Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; it had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. | 11And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. |
It exercises all the authority of the first beast on its behalf and compels the earth and those who live on it to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound was healed. | 12And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. |
It also performs great signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to earth in front of people. | 13And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, |
It deceives those who live on the earth because of the signs that it is permitted to perform in the presence of the beast, telling those who live on the earth to make an image of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived. | 14And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. |
It was permitted to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast could both speak and cause whoever would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. | 15And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. |
And it makes everyone--small and great, rich and poor, free and slave--to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, | 16And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: |
so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark: the beast's name or the number of its name. | 17And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. |
This calls for wisdom: Let the one who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, because it is the number of a person. Its number is 666. | 18Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six. |
