Hosea 9
CSB Parallel ISV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
Christian Standard BibleInternational Standard Version
Israel, do not rejoice jubilantly as the nations do, for you have acted promiscuously, leaving your God. You love the wages of a prostitute on every grain-threshing floor.1"Don't celebrate, Israel, like other nations would rejoice, because you left your God by committing fornication, loving the profit you gained on all of the threshing floors.
Threshing floor and wine vat will not sustain them, and the new wine will fail them.2Neither threshing floor nor winepress will sustain them, and the new wine will disappoint her.
They will not stay in the land of the LORD. Instead, Ephraim will return to Egypt, and they will eat unclean food in Assyria.3They will not live in the LORD's land— Ephraim will return to Egypt, and they will eat unclean food in Assyria.
They will not pour out their wine offerings to the LORD, and their sacrifices will not please him. Their food will be like the bread of mourners; all who eat it become defiled. For their bread will be for their appetites alone; it will not enter the house of the LORD.4They won't present wine offerings to the LORD, nor will they please him. Their sacrifices will seem like food for mourners— everyone who eats them will become unclean; none of them will enter the Temple of the LORD.
What will you do on a festival day, on the day of the LORD's feast?5"What will you do on the designated holiday, when the LORD's festival comes?
For even if they flee from devastation, Egypt will gather them, and Memphis will bury them. Thistles will take possession of their precious silver; thorns will invade their tents.6Look! They have gone away because of the destruction— Egypt will gather them up, and Memphis will bury them. Weeds will overgrow their inheritance, and thorns will grow in their tents.
The days of punishment have come; the days of retribution have come. Let Israel recognize it! The prophet is a fool, and the inspired man is insane, because of the magnitude of your iniquity and hostility.7The time for your judgment has now come; payday is here— and Israel knows it. The prophet is a fool, and the spiritual man is insane. Because of your great sin, the hatred against you is great.
Ephraim's watchman is with my God. Yet the prophet encounters a bird trap on all his pathways. Hostility is in the house of his God!8While Ephraim stands watch with my God, the prophet has snares set that will trap his ways, and hostility lodges in the Temple of his God.
They have deeply corrupted themselves as in the days of Gibeah. He will remember their iniquity; he will punish their sins.9They have corrupted themselves deeply, as did Gibeah in its day. Therefore God will remember their lawlessness, and he will pay them back for their sins.
I discovered Israel like grapes in the wilderness. I saw your fathers like the first fruit of the fig tree in its first season. But they went to Baal-peor, consecrated themselves to Shame, and became abhorrent, like the thing they loved.10"I found Israel, as one finds grapes in the wilderness; Your ancestors seemed to me like the fruit gleaned from a fig tree's first harvest. When they went to Baal-peor, they devoted themselves to that filth, and they became loathsome, like what they loved.
Ephraim's glory will fly away like a bird: no birth, no pregnancy, no conception.11The glory of Ephraim will fly away like a bird— no birth, no pregnancy, not even a conception.
Even if they raise children, I will bereave them of each one. Yes, woe to them when I depart from them!12Even if they rear their children, I will, in turn, make them childless— in fact, woe to them when I turn away from them!
I have seen Ephraim like Tyre, planted in a meadow, so Ephraim will bring out his children to the executioner.13Ephraim, as I see it, is like Tyre, planted in a comfortable place; Ephraim will bear children but they will be executed."
Give them, LORD--What should you give? Give them a womb that miscarries and breasts that are dry!14Give them, LORD— What will you give? You will give them a womb that miscarries and dry breasts.
All their evil appears at Gilgal, for there I began to hate them. I will drive them from my house because of their evil, wicked actions. I will no longer love them; all their leaders are rebellious.15"All of their wickedness started in Gilgal, because I began to hate them there. Because of the wickedness of their behavior, I will drive them from my Temple. I will not love them anymore; all their leaders are rebels.
Ephraim is struck down; their roots are withered; they cannot bear fruit. Even if they bear children, I will kill the precious offspring of their wombs.16Ephraim is blighted; its roots shriveled. It can bear no fruit. Even if they bear children, I will kill their cherished offspring.
My God will reject them because they have not listened to him; they will become wanderers among the nations.17"My God will reject them, because they did not obey him, and they will become wanderers among the nations."
