The Philistines fought against Israel, and Israel's men fled from them. Many were killed on Mount Gilboa. | 1The Philistines were fighting against Israel, and each soldier of Israel fled before the Philistines. They fell slain on the mountain of Gilboa. |
The Philistines pursued Saul and his sons and killed his sons Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchishua. | 2The Philistines followed after Saul and after his sons, and the Philistines struck down Jonathan, Abinadab, and Malchi-shua, Saul's sons. |
When the battle intensified against Saul, the archers spotted him and severely wounded him. | 3The heaviest fighting was against Saul, and when the archers who were shooting located Saul, he was gravely wounded by them. |
Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, "Draw your sword and run me through with it, or these uncircumcised men will come and torture me." But his armor-bearer would not do it because he was terrified. Then Saul took his sword and fell on it. | 4Saul ordered his armor bearer, "Draw your sword and run me through with it, or these uncircumcised people will come and abuse me." But his armor bearer did not want to do it because he was very frightened, so Saul took the sword and fell on it. |
When his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his own sword and died. | 5When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword and died. |
So Saul and his three sons died--his whole house died together. | 6Therefore Saul, his three sons, and all his entire household died together. |
When all the men of Israel in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled. So the Philistines came and settled in them. | 7When that part of the army of Israel that was in the valley saw that the rest of the army of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled, and the Philistines came and occupied them. |
The next day when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his sons dead on Mount Gilboa. | 8The Philistines came to strip the dead the next day, and they found Saul dead on Gilboa mountain, along with his sons. |
They stripped Saul, cut off his head, took his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to spread the good news to their idols and the people. | 9They stripped him, took his head and armor, and sent messengers throughout the territory of the Philistines to report the news to their idols and to the people. |
Then they put his armor in the temple of their gods and hung his skull in the temple of Dagon. | 10Then they put Saul's armor in the temple of their gods and fastened his skull to the wall of the temple of Dagon. |
When all Jabesh-gilead heard of everything the Philistines had done to Saul, | 11When all the residents of Jabesh-gilead heard everything that the Philistines had done to Saul, |
all their brave men set out and retrieved the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons and brought them to Jabesh. They buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh and fasted seven days. | 12every valiant soldier got up, removed the bodies of Saul and his sons, took them to Jabesh, and buried their bones under the tamarisk tree in Jabesh. Then they fasted for seven days. |
Saul died for his unfaithfulness to the LORD because he did not keep the LORD's word. He even consulted a medium for guidance, | 13So Saul died for his transgressions; that is, he acted unfaithfully to the LORD by transgressing the message from the LORD (which he did not keep), by consulting a medium for advice, |
but he did not inquire of the LORD. So the LORD put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David son of Jesse. | 14and by not seeking counsel from the LORD, who therefore put him to death and turned the kingdom over to Jesse's son David. |
