Berean Study Bible | New Living Translation |
And the LORD said to Job: | 1Then the LORD said to Job, |
“Will the faultfinder contend with the Almighty? Let him who argues with God give an answer.” | 2“Do you still want to argue with the Almighty? You are God’s critic, but do you have the answers?” Job Responds to the LORD |
Then Job answered the LORD: | 3Then Job replied to the LORD, |
“Behold, I am insignificant. How can I reply to You? I place my hand over my mouth. | 4“I am nothing—how could I ever find the answers? I will cover my mouth with my hand. |
I have spoken once, but I have no answer—twice, but I have nothing to add.” | 5I have said too much already. I have nothing more to say.” The LORD Challenges Job Again |
Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: | 6Then the LORD answered Job from the whirlwind: |
“Now brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall inform Me. | 7“Brace yourself like a man, because I have some questions for you, and you must answer them. |
Would you really annul My justice? Would you condemn Me to justify yourself? | 8“Will you discredit my justice and condemn me just to prove you are right? |
Do you have an arm like God’s? Can you thunder with a voice like His? | 9Are you as strong as God? Can you thunder with a voice like his? |
Then adorn yourself with majesty and splendor, and clothe yourself with honor and glory. | 10All right, put on your glory and splendor, your honor and majesty. |
Unleash the fury of your wrath; look on every proud man and bring him low. | 11Give vent to your anger. Let it overflow against the proud. |
Look on every proud man and humble him; trample the wicked where they stand. | 12Humiliate the proud with a glance; walk on the wicked where they stand. |
Bury them together in the dust; imprison them in the grave. | 13Bury them in the dust. Imprison them in the world of the dead. |
Then I will confess to you that your own right hand can save you. | 14Then even I would praise you, for your own strength would save you. |
Look at Behemoth, which I made along with you. He feeds on grass like an ox. | 15“Take a look at Behemoth, which I made, just as I made you. It eats grass like an ox. |
See the strength of his loins and the power in the muscles of his belly. | 16See its powerful loins and the muscles of its belly. |
His tail sways like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are tightly knit. | 17Its tail is as strong as a cedar. The sinews of its thighs are knit tightly together. |
His bones are tubes of bronze; his limbs are rods of iron. | 18Its bones are tubes of bronze. Its limbs are bars of iron. |
He is the foremost of God’s works; only his Maker can draw the sword against him. | 19It is a prime example of God’s handiwork, and only its Creator can threaten it. |
The hills yield him their produce, while all the beasts of the field play nearby. | 20The mountains offer it their best food, where all the wild animals play. |
He lies under the lotus plants, hidden among the reeds of the marsh. | 21It lies under the lotus plants, hidden by the reeds in the marsh. |
The lotus plants conceal him in their shade; the willows of the brook surround him. | 22The lotus plants give it shade among the willows beside the stream. |
Though the river rages, Behemoth is unafraid; he remains secure, though the Jordan surges to his mouth. | 23It is not disturbed by the raging river, not concerned when the swelling Jordan rushes around it. |
Can anyone capture him as he looks on, or pierce his nose with a snare? | 24No one can catch it off guard or put a ring in its nose and lead it away. |
