And the LORD said to Job: | 1The LORD continued his response to Job by saying: |
“Will the faultfinder contend with the Almighty? Let him who argues with God give an answer.” | 2"Should the one who is fighting the Almighty find fault with him? Let God's accuser answer." |
Then Job answered the LORD: | 3Then Job replied to the LORD. He said: |
“Behold, I am insignificant. How can I reply to You? I place my hand over my mouth. | 4"I must look insignificant to you! How can I answer you? I'm speechless. |
I have spoken once, but I have no answer—twice, but I have nothing to add.” | 5I spoke once, but I can't answer; I tried a second time, but I won't do so anymore." |
Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: | 6The LORD answered Job from the wind storm and told him: |
“Now brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall inform Me. | 7"Stand up like a man! I'll ask you some questions, and you give me some answers! |
Would you really annul My justice? Would you condemn Me to justify yourself? | 8Indeed would you annul my justice and condemn me, just so you can claim that you're righteous? |
Do you have an arm like God’s? Can you thunder with a voice like His? | 9Do you have strength like God? Can you create thunder with a sound like he can?" |
Then adorn yourself with majesty and splendor, and clothe yourself with honor and glory. | 10"When you have adorned yourself with exalted majesty, clothed yourself with splendor and dignity, |
Unleash the fury of your wrath; look on every proud man and bring him low. | 11dispensed the fury of your anger, made sure that you have humbled every proud person, |
Look on every proud man and humble him; trample the wicked where they stand. | 12stared down and subdued every proud person, trampled the wicked right where they are, |
Bury them together in the dust; imprison them in the grave. | 13buried them in the dust together, and sent them bound to that secret place, |
Then I will confess to you that your own right hand can save you. | 14then I will applaud you myself! I'll admit that you can deliver yourself by your own efforts!" |
Look at Behemoth, which I made along with you. He feeds on grass like an ox. | 15"Please observe Behemoth, which I made along with you. He eats grass like an ox. |
See the strength of his loins and the power in the muscles of his belly. | 16Now take a look at the strength that he has in his loins, and in the muscles of his abdomen. |
His tail sways like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs are tightly knit. | 17His tail protrudes stiffly, like cedar; the sinews of his thigh interlink for strength. |
His bones are tubes of bronze; his limbs are rods of iron. | 18His bones are conduits of bronze; his strong bones are like bars of iron. |
He is the foremost of God’s works; only his Maker can draw the sword against him. | 19He is the grandest of God's undertakings, yet his creator is approaching him with his sword. |
The hills yield him their produce, while all the beasts of the field play nearby. | 20Mountains produce food for him, where all the wild animals frolic. |
He lies under the lotus plants, hidden among the reeds of the marsh. | 21He lies under the lotus trees, hiding under reeds and marshes. |
The lotus plants conceal him in their shade; the willows of the brook surround him. | 22The lotus trees cover him with their shade, and willows that line the wadis surround him. |
Though the river rages, Behemoth is unafraid; he remains secure, though the Jordan surges to his mouth. | 23What you see as a raging river doesn't alarm him; he is confident when the Jordan overflows. |
Can anyone capture him as he looks on, or pierce his nose with a snare? | 24Are your eyes looking to capture him, or to pierce his snout with a bridle?" |
