Then the LORD said to Moses,1The LORD spoke to Moses,
“Speak to the whole congregation of Israel and tell them: Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.2"Tell the entire assembly of Israel that they are to be holy, since I, the LORD your God, am holy.
Each of you must respect his mother and father, and you must keep My Sabbaths. I am the LORD your God.3"Each of you is to fear his mother and father. "Observe my Sabbaths. I am the LORD your God.
Do not turn to idols or make for yourselves molten gods. I am the LORD your God.4"You are not to turn to their idols or cast gods out of melted metal for yourselves. I am the LORD your God.
When you sacrifice a peace offering to the LORD, you shall offer it for your acceptance.5"When you offer a peace offering to the LORD, you are to offer it for your acceptance.
It shall be eaten on the day you sacrifice it, or on the next day; but what remains on the third day must be burned up.6Your sacrifice is to be eaten on that day and the next day. Anything that remains to the third day is to be incinerated.
If any of it is eaten on the third day, it is tainted and will not be accepted.7If it is eaten on the third day, it's unclean. It won't be accepted.
Whoever eats it will bear his iniquity, for he has profaned what is holy to the LORD. That person must be cut off from his people.8Anyone who eats it will bear the punishment of his sin, since he will have defiled himself regarding the LORD's holy things. That person is to be eliminated from contact with his people."
When you reap the harvest of your land, you are not to reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest.9"When you reap the harvest of your land, you are not to completely finish harvesting the corners of the field—that is, you are not to pick what remains after you have reaped your harvest.
You must not strip your vineyard bare or gather its fallen grapes. Leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the LORD your God.10You are not to gather your vineyard or pick up the fallen grapes of your vineyard. Leave something for the poor and the resident alien who lives among you. I am the LORD your God."
You must not steal. You must not lie or deceive one another.11"You are not to steal or lie or deal falsely with your neighbor.
You must not swear falsely by My name and so profane the name of your God. I am the LORD.12"You are not to use my name to deceive, thereby defiling the name of your God. I am the LORD.
You must not defraud your neighbor or rob him. You must not withhold until morning the wages due a hired hand.13"You are not to oppress your neighbor or rob him. "The wages of a hired laborer are not to remain in your possession until morning.
You must not curse the deaf or place a stumbling block before the blind, but you shall fear your God. I am the LORD.14"You are not to curse a deaf person or put a stumbling block before the blind. "You are to fear God. I am the LORD.
You must not pervert justice; you must not show partiality to the poor or favoritism to the rich; you are to judge your neighbor fairly.15"You are not to be unjust in deciding a case. You are not to show partiality to the poor or honor the great. Instead, decide the case of your neighbor with righteousness."
You must not go about spreading slander among your people. You must not endanger the life of your neighbor. I am the LORD.16"You are not to go around slandering your people. "You are not to stand idle when your neighbor's life is at stake. I am the LORD.
You must not harbor hatred against your brother in your heart. Directly rebuke your neighbor, so that you will not incur guilt on account of him.17"You are not to hate your relative in your heart. Rebuke your neighbor if you must, but you are not to incur guilt on account of him.
Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against any of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.18"You are not to seek vengeance or hold a grudge against the descendants of your people. Instead, love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD."
You are to keep My statutes. You shall not crossbreed two different kinds of livestock; you shall not sow your fields with two kinds of seed; and you shall not wear clothing made of two kinds of material.19"Observe my statutes. "You are not to let your cattle breed with a different species. "You are not to sow your fields with two different kinds of seeds. "You are not to wear clothing made from two different kinds of material.
If a man lies carnally with a slave girl promised to another man but who has not been redeemed or given her freedom, there must be due punishment. But they are not to be put to death, because she had not been freed.20"When a person has sexual relations with a woman servant who is engaged to another man, but she has not been completely redeemed nor has her freedom been granted to her, there is to be an inquiry, but they won't be put to death, since she has not been freed.
The man, however, must bring a ram to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting as his guilt offering to the LORD.21The perpetrator is to bring his guilt offering to the LORD at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting—that is, a ram as a guilt offering.
The priest shall make atonement on his behalf before the LORD with the ram of the guilt offering for the sin he has committed, and he will be forgiven the sin he has committed.22Then the priest is to make atonement for him with the ram as a guilt offering in the LORD's presence on account of his sin which he has committed, but which will be forgiven him."
When you enter the land and plant any kind of tree for food, you shall regard the fruit as forbidden. For three years it will be forbidden to you and must not be eaten.23"When you have entered the land and planted all sorts of trees for food, regard its fruit as uncircumcised for the first three years for you. It is not to be eaten.
In the fourth year all its fruit must be consecrated as a praise offering to the LORD.24During the fourth year, all its fruit is to be offered as a holy token of praise to the LORD.
But in the fifth year you may eat its fruit; thus your harvest will be increased. I am the LORD your God.25But on the fifth year, you may eat its fruits to increase its produce for you."
You must not eat anything with blood still in it. You must not practice divination or sorcery.26"You are not to eat anything containing blood, engage in occult practices, or practice fortune telling.
You must not cut off the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.27"You are not to cut your hair in ritualistic patterns on your head or deface the edges of your beard.
You must not make any cuts in your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD.28"You are not to make incisions in your flesh on account of the dead nor submit to cuts or tattoos. I am the LORD.
You must not defile your daughter by making her a prostitute, or the land will be prostituted and filled with depravity.29"You are not to defile your daughter by engaging her in prostitution so the land won't become filled with wickedness.
You must keep My Sabbaths and have reverence for My sanctuary. I am the LORD.30"Observe my Sabbath and stand in awe of my sanctuary. I am the LORD.
You must not turn to mediums or spiritists; do not seek them out, or you will be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.31"You are to consult neither mediums nor familiar spirits. You are never to seek them—you'll just be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.
You are to rise in the presence of the elderly, honor the aged, and fear your God. I am the LORD.32"Rise in the presence of the aged and honor the elderly face-to-face. "Fear your God. I am the LORD.
When a foreigner resides with you in your land, you must not oppress him.33"If a resident alien lives with you in your land, you are not to mistreat him.
You must treat the foreigner living among you as native-born and love him as yourself, for you were foreigners in the land of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.34You are to treat the resident alien the same way you treat the native born among you—love him like yourself, since you were foreigners in the land of Egypt.
You must not use dishonest measures of length, weight, or volume.35"You are not to act unjustly in deciding a case or when measuring weight and quantity.
You shall maintain honest scales and weights, an honest ephah, and an honest hin. I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.36You are to maintain just balances and reliable standards for weights, dry volumes, and liquid volumes. I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.
You must keep all My statutes and all My ordinances and follow them. I am the LORD.”37Observe all my statutes and all my ordinances in order to practice them. I am the LORD."
